Chapter 6 - Healing After the Rain

Three months later, the backyard of our home in Oakhaven Springs was filled with life once again.

The air smelled of damp earth, blooming jasmine, and fresh coffee. The festive string lights had been rehung, casting a warm, golden glow over the small gathering of close friends and family. There were no grand floral arrangements this time, no expensive tequila, and no whispering aunts.

Just the people who mattered.

Julian Vance was currently awaiting trial in a federal detention facility, facing up to twenty years for financial fraud and conspiracy. The Oakhaven Valley development project had been restructured, with Katherine and the Thorne estate taking full control of the land, ensuring it would be preserved as a public nature park rather than a commercial concrete jungle.

Caleb and Katherine stood near the rose bushes, talking quietly.

Caleb had spent the last three months working tirelessly to rebuild the trust he had shattered on their wedding night. He had sat through hours of family counseling, had apologized a thousand times to Katherine, and had dedicated himself to being the man she deserved.

It hadn't been easy. The scars of that night were deep, but they were healing.

Katherine looked beautiful. She wasn't wearing a wedding dress this time—just a simple summer dress and a light cardigan—but her eyes carried a peace and a warmth that had been entirely missing on her wedding night. She laughed at something Caleb said, her hand resting gently on his arm.

Robert walked up beside me, holding two cups of warm spiced cider. He handed one to me, his rough hand brushing against mine.

"They’re going to be okay, Grace," Robert said softly, looking at our children.

"I know," I whispered, leaning my head against his shoulder. "They survived the storm."

Katherine looked over and caught my eye. She smiled—a genuine, deep smile of pure gratitude—and walked over to where I was standing. She wrapped her arms around my neck, holding me tight.

"Thank you, Mom," she whispered in my ear. "Thank you for saving us."

"You are my daughter, Katherine," I said, kissing her cheek. "A mother always protects her own."
