Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master

The kitchen fell into a dead, ringing silence.

Robert stood up slowly, his towering frame casting a long shadow over our son. "Julian told you? Caleb... have you been talking to Julian Vance about your wife?"

Caleb swallowed hard, his arrogant posture suddenly crumbling. He looked at the diary on the table, then at Katherine, who was staring at him with a mixture of horror and profound sorrow.

"Julian... he contacted me three months ago," Caleb admitted, his voice dropping to a whisper. "He said he knew what happened to Beatrice. He said he couldn't live with the guilt of keeping his cousin’s secrets anymore. He gave me the diary. He said Katherine had left it at his house by accident."

"And you believed him?" Katherine cried, her voice cracking. "Julian has hated me since we were children, Caleb! He tried to have me committed to a psychiatric facility after my mother died so he could take my share of the estate! How could you trust him over me?"

"Because he had proof!" Caleb yelled back, tears finally spilling from his eyes. "He had the letters! He had the police reports! He showed me financial records where you transferred money out of Beatrice's account the day after she died!"

"I didn't transfer any money!" Katherine protested, standing up. "My stepfather’s executor handled all the transfers! Julian was the one who had access to the accounts!"

I stepped toward Caleb, grabbing his hand. It was cold and shaking. "Caleb, look at me. You are a civil engineer. You look at blueprints, you verify measurements, you never build a bridge based on one person's word. Why did you do this to Katherine? Why didn't you come to us? Why didn't you ask her?"

"Because I was hurt, Mom!" Caleb sobbed, his defenses finally breaking down completely. He sank into a kitchen chair, burying his face in his hands. "Every time I looked at Katherine, I saw Beatrice. I saw her falling from that balcony. Julian kept calling me, whispering in my ear, telling me that Katherine was laughing at me, that she was using me just like she used Beatrice. He said if I confronted her directly, she’d run, she’d destroy the evidence, and she’d never pay for what she did. He told me to wait until the wedding night. He said the shock would break her, and she’d confess."

He looked up at Katherine, his eyes filled with a sudden, devastating realization of his own foolishness.

"I was so blind," Caleb whispered. "I let him poison my mind."

"He didn't just poison your mind, son," Robert said, his face grim. "He used you to do his dirty work. If Katherine ran away tonight, or if she confessed to something she didn't do under duress, her inheritance would be forfeit under the family trust’s morality clause. Julian would get everything. And you... you would have spent the rest of your life in prison for domestic abuse or worse."

The sheer scale of Julian’s manipulation was terrifying. He had taken a grieving, vulnerable young man, fed his anger for months, and turned him into a weapon against the woman he loved—all to secure a multi-million dollar real estate development.

Suddenly, the landline phone on the wall began to ring.

We all jumped. Robert walked over and picked up the receiver. He listened for a moment, his expression hardening into stone.

"It’s for you, Caleb," Robert said, holding out the phone. "It’s Julian."

Caleb stared at the receiver as if it were a poisonous snake. He stood up slowly, walked to the wall, and took the phone. He pressed it to his ear.

"Julian," Caleb said, his voice flat.

We couldn't hear the other side of the conversation, but we watched Caleb’s face turn from pale to a deep, dangerous crimson. His jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his neck strained.

"Yes," Caleb said. "She’s still here. She’s... she’s packing her things."

A pause.

"No, she didn't confess. But she’s terrified. I have the diary."

Another pause.

"Alright. I'll meet you at the Oakhaven Valley construction office in an hour. We’ll finalize the paperwork to transfer her share of the land to your holding company. Just... keep your word, Julian. Make sure this stays out of the press."

Caleb hung up the phone. He turned to us, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying resolve. The weak, crying boy was gone. In his place stood a man who had finally realized he had been played—and was ready to fight back.

"He wants the land," Caleb said. "He has a notary waiting at the construction site. He thinks I’ve broken Katherine enough to make her sign the transfer documents."

He looked at Katherine, then at me and Robert.

"We’re going to give him exactly what he wants," Caleb said. "But we’re bringing our own audience."
