Chapter 2 - THE HOUSE OF SECRETS

The Marchetti estate was a massive, walled fortress sitting on a cliff overlooking the dark, churning ocean. Iron gates rolled open silently as the convoy of black SUVs pulled up the winding driveway.

Inside the primary vehicle, the silence had been broken only by the soft breathing of the three toddlers. The moment I had climbed into the back seat, the two boys—Leo and Lucas—had practically crawled over Damian's expensive suit pants to get into my lap alongside their sister.

Now, inside the grand foyer of the mansion, soft chandelier light reflected off polished marble floors. A team of maid staff and private nurses stood in a neat line, their faces pale with shock as they watched the notoriously cold Damian Marchetti enter his home carrying three peaceful, sleeping children, led by a drenched waitress in a stained uniform.

"Take the children upstairs to the nursery," Damian instructed the head nurse gently.

The nurse stepped forward, reaching for Bella. The second the woman's hands touched the little girl's blanket, Bella let out a high-pitched scream, flailing her little fists. Across the hall, Leo and Lucas instantly woke up, their faces screwing up to cry.

"No!" Bella cried out, her tiny hands grasping wildly at my apron. "Mama! Mama!"

The head nurse shrank back in terror, looking nervously at Damian.

I immediately sank down onto my knees on the cold marble floor, gathering all three toddlers into my arms. "Shh, shh, I'm here. I'm right here," I cooed, burying my face in their soft, fragrant hair. "Mama's not going anywhere. I promise."

Instantly, like magic, the crying stopped. They buried their tiny faces into my neck, breathing in small, synchronous hiccups.

Damian stood over us, his expression unreadable, though a muscle twitched violently in his jaw. He motioned to the staff. "Clear the room. All of you."

The servants vanished like ghosts.

"Follow me," Damian said, turning toward a pair of massive mahogany doors at the end of the hall. "We are going to talk."

I stood up awkwardly, carrying Bella while the two boys held firmly onto the fabric of my skirt, shuffling along beside my feet like little ducks.

Damian’s private study was lined with thousands of leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling windows showing the storm outside, and a massive mahogany desk covered in secure computer monitors.

He didn't sit behind his desk. Instead, he poured two glasses of amber liquid from a crystal carafe, walked over to a leather sofa, and pointed to it. "Sit."

I sat down, and the boys immediately scrambled onto the cushions beside me, leaning their heavy heads against my thighs. Bella remained glued to my chest.

Damian sat in an armchair opposite us, taking a slow sip from his glass. "Ten minutes ago, my intelligence team pulled your complete life history, Maya."

My breath caught. "And?"

"Maya Lin. Twenty-six years old. Former nursing student. Fourteen months ago, you were admitted to Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital at thirty-two weeks gestation with severe preeclampsia," Damian read off a tablet in his hand, his voice flat and precise. "An emergency C-section was performed by Dr. Richard Vance. According to the official medical report, all three infants suffered acute placental abruption and were stillborn. You were kept under heavy sedation for four days due to post-partum hemorrhaging."

A tear slipped down my cheek, hot and stinging. "They told me... they told me their hearts stopped before they could even scream. They wouldn't even let me see their bodies. They said it would be too traumatizing."

Damian set the tablet down on the coffee table. He looked directly into my eyes, his dark gaze piercing through my soul.

"Fourteen months ago," Damian said slowly, "my wife, Elena Marchetti, was dying of stage four uterine cancer. She was desperate for an heir—desperate to leave something behind. She spent millions of dollars traveling to private clinics, looking for surrogate options, but her condition deteriorated too fast."

My blood ran ice cold. The room felt like it was spinning out of control. "What are you saying?"

"Fourteen months ago, at Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital," Damian continued, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register, "Dr. Richard Vance was paid three million dollars in untraceable offshore funds. On the exact same night you were told your babies died, Dr. Vance delivered three healthy premature triplets to my wife’s private medical suite on the top floor of that same hospital."

I stopped breathing. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.

"No..." I whispered, clutching Bella so tightly she let out a soft murmur. "No, no, no... my babies didn't die?"

"Elena died three months after bringing them home," Damian said, his eyes filled with a turbulent storm of fury and guilt. "She told me she had hired an anonymous surrogate in California. She showed me forged birth certificates naming her as the mother. I was so consumed by her terminal illness and protecting my territory that I didn't question it. I believed they were mine."

He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees, his face inches from mine.

"Until today," Damian whispered. "Until I watched my children—who have rejected every mother figure, every nanny, every woman who has walked through that door for a year—run into the arms of a complete stranger and call her 'Mama.'"

"They aren't your children!" I screamed, standing up so fast the boys startled. Tears were streaming freely down my face, hot, furious, heartbroken tears. "They're MY babies! You stole them! Your family STOLE MY CHILDREN!"

Outside the study, the heavy double doors instantly burst open. Four guards stepped into the room with drawn handguns, sensing a threat to their boss.

"Boss!" Viktor yelled.

"GET OUT!" Damian roared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings like thunder. "GET THE HELL OUT AND CLOSE THE DOORS!"

The guards froze in shock, then quickly retreated, slamming the doors shut behind them.

I stood there, hyperventilating, holding Bella to my chest while Leo and Lucas hid behind my legs, holding my ankles.

Damian stood up slowly. He didn't approach me. He raised his hands in a rare gesture of surrender.

"You're right," Damian said, his voice raw and raspy. "If what my security team is uncovering right now is true... then my late wife committed an unforgivable crime against you. Saint Jude’s Hospital, Dr. Vance, and everyone involved ripped those children from your arms while you were bleeding on an operating table."

He took a step back, respecting my space.

"I am a dangerous man, Maya," Damian said softly. "I have killed people who crossed me. But I do not harm innocents, and I do not steal children from loving mothers. If a DNA test confirms what we both already know in our hearts... I will not hide them from you."

I stared at him through my tears, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. "You... you won't take them away from me again?"

"No," Damian swore, his dark eyes burning with absolute sincerity. "In fact, right now, you are the only person keeping them alive and calm. But listen to me carefully, Maya."

He pointed toward the storm outside the window.

"The men who arranged this—Dr. Vance, the corrupt board members at Saint Jude's, and the human trafficking ring operating behind that hospital—they are powerful, dangerous people. If they find out you are alive, awake, and standing in my house with those children, they will come for you to cover their tracks."

May you like

He stepped closer, his shadow falling over me once again.

"You are staying in this house tonight, Maya. Not as a guest. Not as a servant. But as the mother of the Marchetti heirs. And tomorrow... we tear down everyone who hurt you."
