Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

Thursday morning arrived under a dark, bruised sky. A heavy freezing rain beat against the glass towers of downtown Chicago.

On the forty-fifth floor of the Mercer Ridge Technologies headquarters, the grand auditorium was packed to capacity. Over three hundred major shareholders, tech journalists, television cameras, and corporate board members sat in velvet seats, their voices creating a loud, energetic hum.

The public expectation was high. The press believed they were attending a joint press conference where Graham Mercer would announce his upcoming marriage and a massive new charitable foundation.

Behind the heavy wooden doors of the backstage greenroom, Vanessa stood before a full-length mirror, adjusting an immaculate cream-colored suit. Her diamond engagement ring sparkled brightly under the vanity lights.

Standing beside her was her father, Judge Harrison Hale, a formidable silver-haired man with cold blue eyes and a reputation for absolute ruthless authority.

“Is everything in place with the legal transfers?” Vanessa whispered, checking her lipstick.

“The board has already reviewed the medical certificates signed by your private doctor,” Judge Hale replied in a low, satisfied tone. “Once Graham steps up to the podium and stumbles through his speech, I will read the affidavit of medical incompetence. The board will vote immediately to transfer his voting shares to you. By four o’clock today, Mercer Ridge belongs to us.”

Vanessa smiled at her reflection. “And his flight to Zurich?”

“The medical transport is waiting at O'Hare,” her father confirmed. “He’ll be sedated before the plane leaves American airspace. He’ll never see Chicago again.”

The greenroom door opened.

Graham walked in, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. He walked slowly, leaning heavily on a polished wooden cane. Behind him walked Nora, dressed in a simple housekeeper’s outfit, holding a tray with a glass of water and a small velvet pouch.

Vanessa immediately rushed to Graham’s side, her face overflowing with fake devotion. “Darling! You shouldn't be walking without help. Here, sit down before we go out.”

Graham sat in the leather chair, leaning his head back, his eyes appearing unfocused.

“Are you ready, Graham?” Judge Hale asked, stepping forward with a stack of legal documents. “The board is eager to begin.”

Graham looked at the Judge, then at Vanessa. He didn't speak. He simply gave a slow, vacant nod.

“Good,” Vanessa purred, leaning down to kiss his cheek. “Just read the first paragraph on the teleprompter, darling. I’ll handle everything else.”

A production assistant knocked on the door. “Five minutes to live broadcast, Ms. Hale!”

Vanessa took her father’s arm, stepping out toward the stage wing.

Graham remained seated in the chair. The moment the door closed behind them, he straightened his back. The vacant, confused look vanished from his eyes, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp focus.

He stood up smoothly, leaving the cane resting against the wall.

Nora looked at him, her hands trembling slightly. “Are you ready, Mr. Mercer?”

Graham looked down at the velvet pouch in her hand. “Is Marcus in position with the federal prosecutors?”

“He’s sitting in the front row with the U.S. Attorney,” Nora confirmed.

Graham reached into his coat, pulling out his phone. He sent a single text message to his security team stationed at the back of the auditorium: Execute.

He turned to Nora and offered a firm, reassuring smile. “Let’s go give them their show.”
