Chapter 3 - The Shadow Game

Over the next four days, Graham Mercer performed the greatest acting role of his life.
He played the part of a rapidly deteriorating man. He stumbled slightly when walking down the grand staircase. He spoke in a lower, slurred tone. When Vanessa brought him her poisoned tea every evening, he took the cup, waited until her back was turned, and emptied it into a hidden vacuum flask concealed inside his hollowed-out desk globe.
Every night, he took a dose of a fast-acting chelation agent provided by Marcus to flush the remaining toxins from his bloodstream. Within seventy-two hours, the terrifying hum in his ears began to fade. The crisp, sharp clarity of his hearing began to return like a tide flowing back to shore.
He kept his recovery a total secret from everyone—except Nora and Lily.
During the quiet hours of the morning, while Vanessa was out shopping for wedding decorations or meeting with her public relations team, Graham spent his time in the butler's pantry with the maid’s deaf daughter.
Lily sat on a high stool, her little legs dangling, teaching Graham advanced ASL signs he had forgotten since his grandmother’s death.
“This is 'Secret,'” Lily signed, placing her index finger against her lips and pressing it firmly.
“Secret,” Graham repeated with his hands, smiling gently.
“And this is 'Family,'” she signed, linking her thumbs and forefingers together in a delicate chain.
Graham watched the child's bright, resilient spirit. Despite the fear she had lived under for months, she was quick to laugh, fiercely loving toward her mother, and possessed an uncanny ability to read people's true intentions through their body language.
“She’s very special, Mr. Mercer,” Nora said softly one afternoon as she polished the silver service nearby. “When she was born deaf, my late husband’s family told me she would be a burden. But she sees things nobody else notices.”
“She saved my life, Nora,” Graham said, looking at the young mother. “And as long as I am breathing, she will never want for anything. I’ve already set up an educational trust in her name. The paperwork was finalized this morning.”
Nora stopped polishing, tears brimming in her eyes. “Mr. Mercer... I can’t accept that—”
“You can, and you will,” Graham said firmly. “It’s not charity, Nora. It’s a debt of honor.”
Suddenly, the front heavy oak doors of the mansion echoed with the sharp clatter of high heels.
Vanessa was back early.
Graham instantly changed his posture. He slumped into a nearby armchair, letting his eyelids droop, his expression growing blank and distant.
Vanessa walked into the pantry, holding several luxury shopping bags from Michigan Avenue. She looked at Graham, a look of cold, triumphant satisfaction flashing across her face before she adopted her fake, mournful tone.
“Oh, darling,” Vanessa cooed, dropping her bags and rushing to his side. She took his hands, feeling how cold he was pretending to be. “You look so tired today. Did you take your afternoon tea?”
Graham looked at her, letting his eyes wander past her face as if he couldn't quite focus on her voice.
“What?” he mumbled, speaking in a thick, slurred voice. “I... I couldn't hear you, Vanessa. The noise in my head... it’s so loud today.”
Vanessa turned to Nora, her voice turning sharp and vicious. “Nora! Why wasn't his tea prepared at two o'clock as I instructed? Are you completely incompetent?!”
Nora kept her head bowed, playing her role perfectly. “I’m sorry, Ms. Hale. I was just preparing the tray now.”
“Get it done immediately!” Vanessa snapped.
She turned back to Graham, gently stroking his hair with a sweetness that made Graham’s skin crawl. “Don't worry, my love. I spoke with Dr. Thorne in Zurich today. He has a private medical jet ready for us on Friday. As soon as the shareholder meeting concludes on Thursday and I take over the administrative voting rights, we’ll fly you straight to Switzerland for your treatment.”
Graham stared at her, letting his face remain completely blank.
Thursday, he thought, his heart cold as winter ice. Three days from now.

“Thank you, Vanessa,” Graham slurred out, reaching out to touch her cheek. “What... what would I do without you?”
Vanessa smiled—a beautiful, predatory expression that belonged to a monster in silk. “You’ll never have to find out, darling. I’m going to take care of everything.”
