Chapter 6 - The Master of the House

One Year Later

The morning sun streamed brightly through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors of the grand dining room, illuminating the long mahogany table that had once been used for cold, lethal syndicate negotiations.

Today, the table was covered with colorful plates of pancakes, fresh fruit, warm pastries, and bowls of cereal.

At the head of the table sat Daario Kanti.

He was wearing a comfortable navy blue knit sweater, his dark hair neatly combed, a cup of hot black coffee in his hand. He was reading the morning financial papers, but his attention was repeatedly drawn to the floor beside his chair.

Nineteen-month-old Matteo was now walking—or rather, sprinting—on sturdy little legs. He was wearing denim overalls and a yellow t-shirt, excitedly pushing a bright red wooden toy car across the polished floorboards, letting out loud, joyful engine noises.

"Vroom! Vroom! Dada, look!" Matteo giggled, crashing the toy car straight into the side of Daario’s leather shoe.

Daario set his newspaper down, a broad, fond smile breaking across his face. He leaned down, picked up the toddler, and set him comfortably on his lap.

"That is very impressive driving, Matteo," Daario said, his deep voice rich with affection as he adjusted the boy's overalls. "But we do not run over the driver's feet."

Matteo giggled, grabbing a piece of strawberry from Daario’s plate and stuffing it into his own mouth.

From the kitchen doorway, Elena walked in, carrying a tray of fresh orange juice.

She looked radiant. The dark circles under her eyes were completely gone, replaced by glowing, healthy skin and a quiet, confident joy. She wore a simple, elegant cream silk dress, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders.

She was no longer the maid who tiptoed through the dark hallways in fear. She was the mistress of the estate—and the woman who held the heart of the most powerful man in the city.

"Daario, don't let him eat all your strawberries," Elena laughed, placing the juice tray on the table and leaning down to kiss the top of Matteo’s head.

Daario reached out, his hand resting gently against Elena’s waist, pulling her down for a soft, warm kiss on her lips.

"He can have whatever he wants," Daario murmured against her lips, his dark eyes shining with profound devotion.

A soft knock sounded at the dining room doors.

Leo Vance stepped inside, carrying a leather brief bag. He wore a neat dark suit, but his face carried a warm, relaxed expression—a far cry from the tense intelligence officer of a year ago.

"Good morning, Don Kanti, Mrs. Kanti," Leo greeted respectfully.

"Morning, Leo," Elena smiled. "Have you had breakfast? There are fresh pastries."

"Thank you, Elena, I grabbed something at the gate house," Leo replied with a warm nod. He turned to Daario. "The final legal adoption papers for Matteo were approved by the High Court this morning, Boss. His birth certificate has been officially reissued."

Leo pulled a crisp, gold-stamped legal document from his bag and set it gently beside Daario’s coffee cup.

Daario looked down at the document.

STATE REGISTRY OF BIRTH CHILD: MATTEO DANIEL KANTI FATHER: DAARIO KANTI MOTHER: ELENA KANTI

Daario’s hand traced the dark black ink of his family name printed beside the child’s. A deep, quiet wave of emotion washed through him—a feeling of absolute completion that healed every scar left by his dark past.

"Thank you, Leo," Daario said quietly.

"Also," Leo added with a slight smirk, "the Valenti family completed their withdrawal from the north district yesterday. Their territory has been fully integrated into our logistics network. The city is completely peaceful."

"Good," Daario said, closing the folder. "Tell the lieutenants that I will not be attending the evening summit tonight."

Leo blinked. "Sir? The summit with the harbor directors?"

Daario looked at Elena, who was smiling at him, then down at his son, who was busy trying to balance a silver spoon on Daario's thumb.

"I have more important business at home," Daario said simply.

Leo laughed quietly, bowing his head. "Understood, Boss. I will handle them."

As Leo left the room, the double doors clicked shut, leaving the family in the bright, sunlit room.

Daario stood up, holding Matteo in his left arm, and extended his right hand to Elena.

Together, they walked out through the open glass doors onto the sunny stone terrace. Below them, the gardens—once cold, dark, and off-limits—were filled with blooming colorful flowers, green lawns, and a newly built wooden playground set near the shade of the old oak trees.

Matteo pointed toward the swing set, wriggling excitedly. "Swing! Dada, swing!"

"All right, my prince," Daario laughed, setting the boy down on the soft grass. Matteo took off running toward the swings, his happy laughter echoing across the estate.

Daario wrapped his arms around Elena from behind, pulling her back against his chest as they watched their son play in the warm morning sun.

"A year ago," Elena whispered, resting her head back against his shoulder, "I was terrified to step onto this terrace."

Daario rested his chin gently against her hair, holding her tight against his heart.

"A year ago," Daario murmured softly, "this was just a stone museum filled with ghosts. You and Matteo gave it a soul."

The cold iron gates of the past were closed forever. And in the warmth of the spring sun, the Kanti family stood together—unbreakable, protected, and finally, truly home.
