Chapter 5 - The Symphony of the Blind King

The penthouse lights had been cut. The smart-home system was offline, plunging the multi-million-dollar estate into total, pitch-black darkness.

For ordinary men, darkness was a handicap. For Alessandro Moretti, darkness was home.

He moved through the expansive living room like a phantom, his bare feet making no sound on the polished marble. His blindness was no longer a curse; it was an absolute advantage. He didn't need to see the intruders. He could hear the heavy tactical boots of four armed men sweeping the kitchen area. He could smell the gunpowder on their clothes and the cheap cologne of Petrovic’s elite enforcers.

One, Alessandro counted silently, listening to the soft scrape of a boot against the island counter.

He slid around the corner of the hallway, moving with fluid, deadly grace. A suppressor-equipped rifle clicked in the dark just five feet away.

"Clear," a man whispered in Italian.

"Not quite," Alessandro murmured.

Before the enforcer could pivot, Alessandro stepped out of the shadows, his left hand clamping over the man’s mouth while his right hand brought the butt of his submachine gun down hard against the base of the man’s skull. The enforcer collapsed instantly without a sound. Alessandro caught him, lowered him silently to the floor, and stripped his spare ammunition magazines.

Three left.

"Hey! Marco’s team isn't answering!" a second voice hissed from the direction of the expansive glass balcony doors. "Something’s wrong. The blind bastard is moving."

"Find him and put a bullet in his brain," a third voice barked—the unmistakable snarl of Viktor, Petrovic’s chief lieutenant. "Boss wants his head on a spike."

Alessandro smiled in the dark. A cold, merciless smile that hadn't seen the light of day since the doctors told him he would never see again.

He stepped out into the open living room, deliberately scuffing his boot against the marble floor.

"Over here, Viktor," Alessandro called out, his deep voice echoing off the glass walls.

Rat-tat-tat-tat!

Muzzle flashes erupted from the shadows near the bar. Bullets shattered crystal decanters, chewed through designer leather sofas, and ricocheted off the marble columns. But Alessandro was already gone, sliding low across the floor toward the sound of the gunfire.

He raised his weapon and fired a controlled three-round burst directly toward the muzzle flash.

Thud.

A scream of agony echoed across the room.

"Argh! My leg!" the second enforcer shrieked.

"Shut up, you idiot!" Viktor roared.

Footsteps rushed toward Alessandro from the left. A heavy combat knife sliced through the air where Alessandro’s chest had been a second before. Alessandro pivoted, parrying the knife strike with the barrel of his gun, and drove his elbow straight into Viktor’s jaw with bone-crushing force.

Viktor staggered backward, crashing hard against the glass wall.

Alessandro stepped forward, pressing the cold barrel of his gun directly against the center of Viktor’s forehead.

"Tell Ivan Petrovic," Alessandro whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressive fury, "that if he ever sends another dog near my home, I won't just kill him. I will feed him to the rats in the East River piece by piece."

"D-do it," Viktor gasped, blood pouring from his nose. "You think you’ve won? Petrovic has half the commission in his pocket. You're a blind cripple, Alessandro! You can't run an empire from the dark!"

"I don't run an empire anymore, Viktor," Alessandro replied softly. "I run a graveyard."

Click.

Before Viktor could scream, the elevator chime sounded behind them.

The heavy doors slid open. Stepping out into the dim emergency lighting was Marco Rossi—bloodied, battered, but holding an automatic rifle, flanked by a dozen loyal Moretti capos who had breached the ground-floor security blockade.

"Boss!" Marco shouted, taking in the carnage. "Are you hit?"

"I'm fine," Alessandro said, lowering his weapon from Viktor’s head. "Secure the perimeter. Round up every rat associated with Petrovic in the tri-state area. I want his entire operation dismantled by sunrise."

"And Viktor?" Marco asked, eyeing the trembling lieutenant.

"Tie him to a chair in the basement," Alessandro said coldly. "I'll deal with him when the sun comes up."

Alessandro turned his back on the defeated enforcers and walked slowly down the dark hallway toward the master suite. His heart pounded against his ribs—not from the adrenaline of the firefight, but from the sudden, terrifying realization of what was waiting for him inside.
