Chapter 4 - The Siege of the Penthouse"Lily?" Alessandro breathed, dropping to his knees on the cold marble floor as rapid footsteps echoed behind the child.

Before he could cross the distance, a second figure stumbled out of the elevator foyer—Elena Gomez, bruised, bleeding from a cut on her forehead, clutching her side as she collapsed against the obsidian wall.
"Mr. Moretti... please," Elena gasped, clutching air as blood stained her cheap blouse. "They... they broke into the apartment. Petrovic’s men. They knew about Lily... they were looking for you through us..."
Alessandro was already moving. Guided by the sound of her labored breathing, he crossed the foyer in two strides, catching Elena before she hit the floor. He hoisted her up effortlessly, carrying her toward the master suite like a soldier evacuating a wounded comrade.
"Lily, stay close to my leg," Alessandro commanded, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, controlled fury. "Marco!" he bellowed toward the hallway intercom. "Code Red! Perimeter breached! All guards to the penthouse!"
There was no answer from the intercom. Only static.
Alessandro’s heart skipped a beat. Marco was the deadliest man in the syndicate; if the intercom was dead, it meant the private elevator shaft and stairwells had already been compromised by a professional assault team.
"They're in the building," Alessandro muttered, lowering Elena gently onto the edge of his bed. "Elena, stay here. Lock this door behind me."
"No! Please don't leave us!" Elena cried, grabbing his sleeve.
"Listen to me," Alessandro said, his face inches from hers, his unseeing eyes burning with an intense, terrifying light. "I built this fortress. No one takes anything from my house. No one."
He stood up, pulling a second weapon—a compact tactical submachine gun—from a concealed wall panel behind the headboard. He racked the slide with a sharp, mechanical clack that sounded like a death knell in the quiet room.
"Mister Moretti?" Lily’s small voice trembled from near the doorway.
Alessandro paused, looking down in the direction of the child. He couldn't see her face, but he could feel her presence—pure, fragile, and utterly innocent amid the gathering storm of his violent world.
He knelt down on one knee, reaching out until his hand rested gently on Lily’s small shoulder.
"Lily, do you trust me?" Alessandro asked softly.
"Yes," she whispered without hesitation.
"Good. Stay behind the heavy oak dresser in the corner. Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear. If I don't come back, count to one hundred, and then press the red button on the wall panel. It will open the emergency panic room."
"Are you going to fight the bad men?" she asked, her small fingers wrapping around his thumb.
May you like
"I am going to remind them whose city this is," Alessandro said.
He stood up, turned his back on the only light he had known in three years, and stepped out into the dark hallway of his penthouse.
