Chapter 5 - The New Empire

One year passed.

The skyline of Manhattan looked exactly the same from the top floor of the Emerald Tower. The yellow cabs still crawled through the traffic below, and the city still moved with its usual, arrogant speed.

But inside the corner office of the CEO of Miller Meridian Capital, everything had changed.

The cold, minimalist glass and steel furniture had been replaced by warm, solid oak. The long mahogany conference table was currently covered in a sprawling, multi-colored train set that wound around a stack of quarterly financial summaries. On the corner of the massive executive desk sat a framed photograph of a beautiful, radiant woman with thick brown hair, laughing as she held two blond boys on a sunny beach in Maui.

Sarah’s recovery had been nothing short of miraculous. The targeted immunotherapy had forced the tumor into complete, sustained remission, her strength fully returning under the watchful care of the best doctors Jason’s fortune could buy.

The door to the office opened, and Claire Whitman walked in, carrying a tray of snacks. She didn't look like a terrified executive assistant anymore; she was smiling, her eyes warm as she looked toward the oversized black leather chair.

Two little five-year-old boys were curled up together in the seat, their blond hair mussed from an afternoon nap, their small sneakers dangling over the edge.

And sitting on the floor beside them, his sleeves rolled up, his fingers covered in blue washable marker as he carefully repaired a broken wooden train track, was the billionaire CEO himself.

Jason looked up, a brilliant, content smile breaking across his severe face as he checked his watch. The market was closing in ten minutes, but for the first time in his life, he didn't care about the numbers. He looked at his sons, then out at the vast, glittering city, realizing that the empire he had built didn't belong in the glass tower.

His true kingdom was right here, asleep in his chair.
