Chapter 2 - The Red Backpack

Before Jason could speak, the heavy oak doors of his office burst open. Arthur Sterling, the senior managing partner of the firm and a man who viewed human emotion as a severe liability, strode into the room, holding a thick leather dossier.

“Jason, the board is waiting in the main conference room,” Sterling said, his sharp eyes scanning the room before locking onto the two children with immediate disgust. “What is this? Why are there children eating breakfast in the executive suite? We have the Vanguard acquisition meeting in exactly twelve minutes. This is a forty-billion-dollar deal, Jason. Get security to clear this out.”

Jason didn't stand up. He didn't look at the dossier. He slowly rose from his chair, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the desk.

“The meeting is canceled, Arthur,” Jason said smoothly.

Sterling blinked, his face turning an angry shade of crimson. “Canceled? Are you out of your mind? We’ve spent eighteen months positioning ourselves for this hostile takeover. You can't just walk away because of a security breach!”

“I said, it’s canceled,” Jason repeated, his voice dropping into a freezing, authoritative register that made even the seasoned veteran flinch. “Clear the floor. Inform the board that I am taking an indefinite leave of absence, effective immediately.”

“You’re throwing away your career for... for what?” Sterling sneered, pointing an aggressive finger at the twins.

Jason walked around the desk, stopping mere inches from Sterling’s face. The raw, primal protective instinct that surged through him surprised even himself. “If you ever point your finger at my sons again, Arthur, I will liquidate your entire options package and ensure you never work on Wall Street again. Now, get out of my office.”

Sterling’s mouth opened in shock, but the absolute malice in Jason's ice-blue eyes told him everything he needed to know. He turned on his heel and slammed the door behind him.

Jason turned back to the boys. Lucas was trembling, his small hands clutching the tiny red backpack tightly against his chest.

“Hey,” Jason said gently, dropping to his knees so he was at eye level with them. “It’s okay. Nobody is going to hurt you here. Can I see what’s inside the bag, Lucas?”

Lucas hesitated, looking at Liam for permission. Liam gave a small nod. With slow, tentative movements, Lucas unzipped the worn backpack.

Inside, there were no toys. No coloring books.

There was a small, faded photograph of Sarah, looking exhausted but blissfully happy, holding two tiny, newborn babies in a hospital bed. Beside the photo was a small plush dinosaur with one eye missing. And beneath that lay a stack of medical bills from the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, alongside a legal document labeled Temporary Custody and Guardianship.

Jason pulled the documents out, his eyes scanning the medical terms: Stage IV Small Cell Lung Carcinoma. Unresponsive to chemotherapy. Palliative care initiated.

The life Jason thought he wanted—the penthouse, the international accolades, the index funds, the cold, solitary perfection of his existence—shattered into a million pieces. While he had been celebrating record-breaking quarters, the woman he once loved had been fighting for her life in a public ward, worrying about who would feed her children when her breath finally failed.
