Chapter 5 - The Master Breaker

The warehouse erupted into chaos.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the rusted iron girders in brief, strobing bursts of orange and yellow. Sarah moved like a shadow through the ground-level machinery, drawing fire away from the hiding spot where the children were crouched.

Above them, on the high catwalk, Marcus Kane stepped to the railing of the glass office. He held a heavy combat rifle in his right hand.

"You're out of your depth, Officer!" Marcus’s voice boomed through the warehouse PA system, echoing off the iron walls. "This facility is equipped with a centralized facility breaker! In three minutes, the automated clearing charge will detonate, wiping every server and leveling this block! You have no jurisdiction here!"

Suddenly, a heavy steel door at the far end of the warehouse blew inward with a deafening crack.

A stolen police cruiser smashed through the entry gate, its siren blaring at maximum volume, its high beams catching Marcus directly in the eyes.

Frank Miller leaned out the driver's side window, firing a heavy-gauge shotgun through the glass office window above. The glass shattered into thousands of cascading fragments, showering the catwalk below.

"Lin! Take the catwalk stairs!" Frank roared, diving out of the moving cruiser as it crashed into a stack of oil drums.

Frank hit the concrete floor, rolled, and brought his weapon up, taking out two mercenaries who were rushing his position.

Sarah didn't waste a second. She scrambled up the rusted spiral staircase toward the foreman’s office.

Inside the glass room, Elena was fighting violently against her restraints, her chair tipping over onto its side as one of the remaining guards tried to secure a heavy explosive charge to the central server rack.

"Get away from her!" Sarah screamed, kicking the door open and firing two shots into the guard's vest, dropping him to the floor.

Sarah pulled a tactical knife from her vest and slashed through the heavy zip-ties securing Elena’s wrists.

"Where are my kids?!" Elena gasped, clutching her bleeding wrists, her eyes wild with panic. "Where is Maya?!"

"They're down below! They're safe!" Sarah yelled, pulling Elena to her feet. "We have to clear out! The whole building is rigged!"

Before they could reach the door, Marcus Kane stepped into the frame.

His combat rifle was raised, aimed directly at Sarah’s chest. His scarab tattoo seemed to twist in the flashing red light of the emergency beacons.

"It ends here, Archivist," Marcus said coldly, his finger tightening on the trigger.

CRASH!

From behind Marcus, Frank Miller dropped from an overhead crane beam onto the catwalk, tackling the larger man through the metal railing.

The two men crashed onto the secondary catwalk ten feet below with a bone-shattering impact. Marcus’s rifle skittered over the edge, plunging forty feet to the concrete floor below.

Frank punched Marcus hard across the jaw, but Marcus countered instantly, throwing a heavy elbow that caught Frank across the bridge of his nose. Blood sprayed across the cold iron floor.

Marcus pinned Frank against the steel railing, his hands clamping down around Frank’s throat with terrifying, mechanical force.

"You're just a precinct cop," Marcus hissed, his eyes cold and lifeless. "You don't even know what this company is building."

"I know... what a mother... will do," Frank choked out, reaching blindly down to his tactical belt.

Frank pulled the heavy, metallic key fob—the one recovered from beneath the rug—and slammed it directly into the exposed junction box on the catwalk wall behind Marcus's head.

The high-voltage panel sparked violently. Ten thousand volts of raw electricity surged through the circuit, jumping directly into the metallic thread worked into Marcus's tactical jacket.

Marcus let out a strangled, shuddering gasp as the violent electrical arc threw him backward over the railing. He fell through the darkness, crashing heavily onto the concrete floor far below, motionless.

The emergency sirens began to whine in a descending tone.

The main electrical panel at the far side of the warehouse short-circuited, killing the countdown timer on the demolition charges.

The warehouse went completely silent, save for the sound of falling rain through the shattered roof.
