Chapter 4 - The Riverfront Ironwork

The rain was falling in blinding sheets as Sarah Lin’s unmarked sedan tore through the deserted industrial canal district.
In the backseat, Maya had her arms wrapped tightly around Toby, holding him flat against the seat cushions as the car bounced violently over rusted train tracks.
"Detective Sarah?" Maya whispered, her small voice cutting through the sound of rain slamming against the roof. "Where are we going? Is the bad man pursuing us?"
"We're safe, Maya," Sarah lied smoothly, checking her rearview mirror. Two dark SUVs with extinguished headlights were trailing three blocks behind, closing the distance rapidly. "We're just taking a alternate route to meet your mother."
Sarah pulled her radio from the dashboard mount. "Central, this is Unit 4-Charlie! We are northbound on Dock Street, pursued by two unidentified dark SUVs! We are taking heavy fire from automatic weapons!"
Static washed over the speaker. The entire precinct communications network was dead—jammed by a high-powered regional transmitter mounted somewhere nearby.
"Dammit!" Sarah swore, throwing the radio down.
She pulled out her personal phone, hit speed dial, and connected to Frank's secondary line.
"Sarah!" Frank’s voice was barely audible over the sound of gunfire in the background. "Where are you?!"
"Dock Street! They breached the station, Frank! They had teams posted outside!"
"Listen to me!" Frank yelled, ducking behind a concrete pillar in the precinct basement. "The micro-SD card—it isn't just data! The key fob that was under the rug—it’s an encrypted RFID key for the old iron foundry on 12th Avenue! That’s where Apex stored their local servers! That’s where they took Elena!"
"They're herding us there, Frank!" Sarah yelled, yanked the steering wheel hard to avoid an SUV that tried to ram her rear bumper. "They don't want to kill the kids on the street—they want them at the site to force Elena to unlock the master encryption!"
"I’m thirty seconds behind you in a stolen cruiser!" Frank shouted. "Hold out until I reach the gate!"
Sarah slammed her foot on the accelerator. The sedan roared through the rusted perimeter fence of the abandoned Riverfront Ironworks. The tires shrieked as she spun the car around inside the massive, cavernous dark warehouse, bringing it to a halt behind a pile of crushed steel girders.
"Out! Out!" Sarah barked, pulling Maya and Toby from the backseat.
They sprinted into the depths of the ironworks just as the two pursuing SUVs slammed through the gates, their headlights cutting through the dusty gloom like blinding search beams.
The ironworks was a nightmare of industrial decay—towering overhead cranes, rusted melting vats, and catwalks suspended forty feet in the air. High above the floor, in a glass-walled former foreman’s office, a single light burned.
Through the glass, Sarah could see Elena tied to the chair, surrounded by three armed men.
"Maya," Sarah said, crouching down behind a massive hydraulic press and handing the seven-year-old a small, high-powered LED flashlight. "Do you remember the rule your mom gave you tonight?"
Maya nodded, her eyes bright with fear but filled with an incredible, unyielding courage. "Don't leave my brother. Stay quiet."
"You stay right in this dark crevice between these steel plates," Sarah instructed gently. "No matter what you hear, no matter how loud it gets, you keep Toby's mouth covered and don't turn on this light until I come back to get you. Do you understand?"
"Detective Sarah?" Maya caught her sleeve. "Save my mommy."
May you like
"I will," Sarah promised.
She stood up, racked her slide, and stepped out into the open warehouse, firing three rapid shots into the engine block of the lead SUV.
