Chapter 4 - The Sealed File

By midnight, the Bethesda estate felt less like a luxury home and more like a command center under siege.
Jonathan had placed the entire security detail on high alert, locking down the perimeter and revoking Dr. Hallowell's digital security clearances to all Mercer Dominion facilities. Owen was dispatched to secure the private server logs from the Dublin hospital where Rebecca had died.
Inside the nursery, Maya remained glued to Eli’s side. She had prepared fresh, organic infant formula using sealed bottled water she had personally unpacked. Eli had fed twice more, his appetite robust and healthy, his vital signs completely normal now that the mysterious injections had stopped.
Jonathan sat in a low armchair beside the crib, watching Maya gently rock Eli to sleep.
"You're remarkably calm under pressure, Maya," Jonathan murmured, his voice heavy with fatigue. "Most people would have run out of here the moment Hallowell threatened us."
Maya kept her eyes on the sleeping child. "When you've lost everything that matters to you, Mr. Mercer, political threats don't hold much power."
Jonathan looked at her thoughtfully. "You mentioned on the plane... you lost a child?"
Maya swallowed hard, the old, familiar ache swelling in her chest. "Nine months ago. A boy. Gabriel. He was born at St. Jude’s Memorial in Boston. They told me he had a severe congenital defect—pulmonary hypoplasia. He lived for less than an hour."
Jonathan’s gaze softened with genuine empathy. "I'm so sorry, Maya. I can't imagine surviving that kind of pain."
"I didn't survive it," Maya said softly, tears glistening in her eyes. "Part of me died in that room. I spent nine months feeling like a hollow shell. But when I heard Eli crying on that plane... my body reacted before my brain did. It felt... wrong. Like a alarm going off in my soul."
The nursery door opened quietly. Owen stepped in, holding a thick, leather-bound folder and a encrypted flash drive. His face was gray, his eyes wide with shock.
"Mr. Mercer," Owen said, his voice barely a whisper. "I bypassed Hallowell's personal assistant and retrieved the hard files from his private safe at the Bethesda research clinic."
Jonathan stood up immediately. "What did you find?"
Owen set the folder on the central table, opening it under the soft light of the nursery lamp. "Hallowell wasn't acting alone. He was receiving private transfers from a Swiss account controlled by your cousin, Julian Mercer."
Jonathan gasped. Julian was the vice-chairman of Mercer Dominion—a man who had contested Jonathan’s leadership for years.
"Julian wanted control of the medical technology portfolio," Owen explained, pointing to a series of financial ledgers. "Rebecca discovered the fraud two months ago while she was in Dublin. She was preparing to bring it to the board. That’s why Hallowell altered her medications... he induced the organ failure to silence her."
Jonathan slammed his fist onto the table, shattering a glass water tumbler. "That monster... he murdered my wife!"
"It gets worse, sir," Owen said, his voice trembling. He pulled out a single sheet of paper from the back of the file—a formal laboratory report stamped with a red seal from a private genetic clinic in Massachusetts. "Hallowell wasn't just controlling Eli's medication. He was covering up the child's origin."
Maya stepped forward, drawn by a sudden, terrifying instinct. "What do you mean, origin?"
Owen looked at Maya with an expression of profound confusion and sorrow. "Eight nine months ago, Julian Mercer authorized a high-level biological swap through Dr. Hallowell’s clinical trial program at St. Jude’s Memorial in Boston. Rebecca’s real baby... was stillborn in Dublin."
The world seemed to stop spinning. The air left Maya’s lungs in a sharp, painful gasp.
"What did you just say?" Maya whispered, her hands shaking violently.
Owen turned the genetic report toward her.
"Julian and Hallowell needed an heir to secure Jonathan's trust assets," Owen read from the document. "When Rebecca lost her pregnancy early in Dublin, Hallowell kept it secret. He used his position as head of the clinical board at St. Jude's in Boston to illegally acquire a healthy, non-attributed newborn from a surrogate donor program... telling the biological mother that her son had died at birth."
Maya stared at the paper. Her eyes scanned the medical codes, the hospital seal, the date of birth—October 14th.
The exact day Gabriel was born.
At the bottom of the page was a formal DNA comparative profile.
Maternal DNA Match: 99.9%—Alvarez, Maya. Infant Designation: Subject Alpha (Gabriel Alvarez).
Maya dropped to her knees, her hands clutching her head as a sound of pure, unadulterated agony and realization tore from her throat.

The infant sleeping in the crib... the baby with the sun-crown whorl on his head... the child whose body had recognized her milk thirty-seven thousand feet above the ocean... was not Eli Mercer.
He was Gabriel. Her son was alive.
