Chapter 2 - The Bruise Beneath the Silk

The flight began its final descent into Washington Dulles International Airport just as dawn began to bleed red and gold across the eastern horizon. Below them, the vast, sprawling grid of the nation's capital emerged from the gray morning mist.

In seat 2A, the atmosphere remained heavy with unspoken tension. Eli had not cried once since feeding. He lay nestled comfortably in Maya’s arms, clutching the fabric of her cardigan with a tiny, relaxed hand.

Maya kept her fingers positioned carefully over the baby’s arm, her mind racing. As a nurse, she knew she couldn't blurt out accusations to a billionaire surrounded by armed guards thirty thousand feet in the air. But as a grieving mother who felt an inexplicable, overwhelming bond with this child, she couldn't simply hand him back and walk away.

"Mr. Mercer," Maya said quietly, keeping her voice beneath the roar of the descending aircraft. "When was Eli’s last full physical examination?"

Jonathan looked over, pulling his eyes away from the window. "Three days ago. In Dublin, before we boarded the private transport. Our personal pediatrician, Dr. Hallowell, signed off on his travel clearance."

"Dr. Hallowell travels with you?"

"He was supposed to," Jonathan said, frowning slightly. "He was called away at the last minute to handle an urgent medical review at one of our subsidiary research facilities in Boston. He sent his assistant, Nurse Vance, to monitor Eli during the flight."

Maya paused. "Nurse Vance? I haven't seen any medical staff in this cabin since I stepped forward."

"She was sitting in business class," Jonathan replied, gesturing toward the back of the plane. "When Eli started screaming, she tried to give him a sedative drop that Dr. Hallowell had prescribed. Eli spat it out and panicked. I told her to step back."

A sedative drop. Maya’s stomach turned over. Sedating an infant suffering from acute feeding distress was bad medicine—bordering on criminal negligence.

"Mr. Mercer," Maya said, choosing her words with extreme precision. "As a pediatric nurse, I need to tell you something. When I was settling Eli, I examined his skin. He has multiple micro-punctures around his left antecubital fossa."

Jonathan stared at her, his brow furrowing. "His what?"

"The inside of his elbow," Maya translated. "He has been injected multiple times within the last forty-eight to seventy-two hours. Do you know what medications he was receiving?"

Jonathan’s face paled. "Injections? No. Eli has had no vaccinations since his two-month checkup. Dr. Hallowell explicitly stated that because of Eli's low birth weight, further injections were postponed."

"Then someone has been giving him unauthorized medication," Maya said firmly. "And given his extreme irritability, his refusal to eat, and his sudden collapse into deep lethargy once he fed... those injections were likely altering his metabolic state."

Before Jonathan could digest her words, the plane’s tires struck the tarmac with a heavy shudder and a sharp screech of rubber. The reverse thrusters roared, slowing the massive jet as it taxied toward a private hangar far removed from the main commercial terminals.

Owen materialized at the front of the cabin before the aircraft had even come to a complete stop.

"Mr. Mercer, the suburban fleet is staged on the tarmac," Owen announced crisply. "We have a direct security escort to the estate in Bethesda. I’ve already notified Dr. Hallowell that we are arriving."

Jonathan stood up, his eyes darting between Owen and Maya. The air in the cabin had suddenly become razor-thin.

"Owen," Jonathan said, his voice cold and deliberate. "Where is Nurse Vance?"

Owen blinked, caught off guard by the question. "She’s gathering her equipment in row twelve, sir. Why?"

"Tell her she is not joining the convoy," Jonathan ordered. "And call Dr. Hallowell. Tell him to meet us at the Bethesda house immediately. Not at his clinic. At my home."

"Sir?" Owen looked confused, his eyes shifting suspiciously toward Maya. "Did she say something to you?"

"She pointed out something that I should have seen myself," Jonathan said fiercely. He turned to Maya, his expression a mixture of profound desperation and raw authority. "Ms. Alvarez... you said you work in Boston?"

"I’m currently on leave," Maya replied, cradling Eli securely against her chest as the plane came to a final halt beside the private terminal.

"Then I am hiring you," Jonathan stated. "Name your fee. Fifty thousand, a hundred thousand—whatever it takes. I want you to stay with my son until I know what is happening in my own home."

Maya looked down at Eli. The baby opened his dark, glossy eyes, staring up at her with an intensity that pulled directly at her heartstrings. She didn't care about Jonathan Mercer’s money. But the thought of handing this child back to a team that was secretly injecting him made her blood run cold.

"I don't want your money, Mr. Mercer," Maya said, standing up and holding Eli tight. "I’m coming because this baby needs protection."
