Chapter 6 - The King’s New Crown

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Bedford, turning the estate’s surrounding hills into a sea of brilliant green, blossoming cherry trees, and vibrant wildflowers.

The ruined wings of the Vale mansion had been completely rebuilt—not as dark, imposing stone corridors, but with wide glass windows, bright hardwood floors, and open spaces that let the sunlight flood every room.

In the backyard, beside a massive newly built swimming pool, a massive wooden playground had been installed.

Seven-year-old Sophie was standing at the top of a slide, holding a yellow plastic flag.

“Ready... set... GO!” Sophie shouted.

Down below, Lucas, Mason, and Theo raced across the lush green grass, laughing hysterically as they tried to tag each other with foam water pistols. Bruno, a massive golden retriever puppy Dominic had bought for the children three months ago, barked happily as he chased their heels.

On the covered stone patio, sitting at a long teak dining table covered in fresh flowers and homemade food, sat Hannah and Dominic.

Hannah wore a simple, elegant blue sundress, her dark hair pinned back with a pearl clip. Her skin was glowing, the exhausted, anxious lines that had once carved her face entirely erased by months of security, peace, and love.

Dominic sat beside her, wearing a comfortable white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The ruthless mob boss who had once terrified New York was gone, replaced by a man who spent his afternoons coaching Little League baseball and holding Hannah’s hand under the table.

“The board approved the final transition of the shipping yards today,” Dominic said softly, leaning closer to her as he poured two glasses of iced tea. “By next month, every single asset under the Vale umbrella will be one hundred percent legal, transparent, and employee-owned.”

Hannah smiled, turning her head to look into his dark, warm eyes. “And what will the King of New York do with all his free time?”

“He’s going to focus on his most important position,” Dominic said quietly.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, navy-blue velvet box.

Hannah’s heart gave a violent, joyful thump.

Dominic took her hand, holding it gently as he opened the box. Inside rested a breathtaking, flawless cushion-cut diamond ring, glowing brilliantly in the spring sunlight.

“Six months ago, a woman walked through my iron gates with forty-three dollars in her purse and more courage than any man I’ve ever met,” Dominic said, his voice deep, rich, and filled with absolute devotion. “She healed my sons, she brought light back into this dead house, and she saved my soul.”

He looked toward the lawn, where Sophie, Lucas, Mason, and Theo had stopped playing and were now peeking behind a rose bush, grinning from ear to ear.

Dominic turned back to Hannah, his eyes locking onto hers.

“Hannah Reed,” Dominic whispered, “will you marry me, and make this fortress a real family?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness welled in Hannah’s eyes. She didn't look back at the broke, terrified single mother who had walked up that wet driveway six months ago; she looked at the future standing right in front of her.

“Yes,” Hannah wept happily, leaning forward as Dominic slipped the ring onto her finger. “Yes, Dominic! A thousand times yes!”

The four children burst out from behind the rose bush, cheering loudly as they sprinted across the lawn, throwing themselves into a massive, chaotic family hug on the patio.

Dominic wrapped his arms around Hannah, his three sons, and his new daughter, pulling them all tight against his heart.

The fortress was no longer a place of fear, power, or secrets. It was a home—built on love, forged in fire, and bound forever.
