Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Four hours later, the sun began to rise over the soot-stained estate.

The fire had been contained to the east and west wings, leaving the central structure charred but intact. Paramedics, police cruisers, and private security vehicles filled the massive lawn.

Inside a mobile medical unit parked near the gate, Hannah sat on the edge of a gurney. An oxygen mask rested around her neck, and a warm blanket was wrapped around her shoulders. Her hands were bandaged from light burns, but her lungs were clear.

Sophie was sitting in her lap, hugging her mother’s waist so tightly her small knuckles were white. Dominic’s private security had retrieved Sophie from Queens two hours ago under top-tier escort.

“I was so scared, Mommy,” Sophie sobbed into Hannah’s shoulder.

“I know, baby. I know,” Hannah whispered, kissing her daughter’s dark hair. “But we’re safe now. I promise.”

Outside the ambulance, a heavy steel door slammed.

Dominic Vale walked across the grass. His charcoal suit was ruined, covered in ash and tear marks from the fire. His face was smudged with soot, his dark hair messy, but his eyes carried a terrifying, absolute clarity.

Beside him walked Viktor, dragging a handcuffed, bloodied Julian by his collar. Julian’s left eye was swollen shut, his sharp suit torn, his expensive demeanor reduced to terrified blobering.

Dominic stopped in front of the ambulance.

He looked at Julian, then at Hannah.

“He tried to sell the ledgers to Chicago,” Hannah said softly, her voice raspy from the smoke. “He hid a scanner in his coat. When I caught him, he threatened to frame me and take Sophie away.”

Dominic slowly turned his head to look at his cousin.

The look in Dominic’s eyes was not anger; it was the cold, absolute judgment of a man who had decided a traitor’s fate.

“You threatened a mother in my house,” Dominic said, his voice so quiet it sent a shudder down Julian’s spine. “You put my sons in a burning building for fifteen million dollars.”

“Dominic... please!” Julian wept, falling to his knees in the grass. “We’re blood! Our grandfathers built this city together! I was angry... I was stupid! Don't do this!”

“Blood ends when betrayal begins,” Dominic said flatly. He looked at Viktor. “Hand him over to Agent Miller at the FBI headquarters in Manhattan. Give them the unedited audio recordings from the study desk, the financial ledgers, and his Chicago bank accounts. Julian will spend the next forty years in a federal penitentiary.”

Julian gasped in shock. “You’re giving the feds the ledgers? That will destroy your own legal immunity!”

“My legal team cleaned my operations six months ago, Julian,” Dominic said coldly. “The only person going to prison today is you.”

Viktor dragged the screaming traitor toward a waiting black sedan, leaving the morning grass silent once more.

Dominic turned back to Hannah.

For the first time in his life, the most feared man in New York looked vulnerable. He looked at the broke single mother who had stood between his children and a roaring inferno, holding her own daughter in her arms.

Dominic stepped closer, stepping into the back of the ambulance unit. He dropped down onto one knee before her, taking Hannah’s bandaged hand in his large, warm palm.

“You saved my boys,” Dominic said, his deep voice trembling slightly with raw emotion. “You could have run out the terrace doors when the alarms went off. You could have saved yourself.”

“I don't leave children behind, Mr. Vale,” Hannah said softly, a tired but radiant smile touching her lips. “Especially not yours.”

Dominic looked up at her, his dark eyes shining with an intensity that made her breath catch.

“My name is Dominic,” he whispered. “And I don't ever want you to call me Mr. Vale again.”
