Chapter 5 - The Turning Tide

By Saturday afternoon, a quiet revolution had taken place inside the Moretti mansion.
The heavy black velvet curtains in the grand living room had been drawn back, allowing bright autumn sunlight to flood the room for the first time in years.
Claire sat on the large Turkish rug in the center of the room, surrounded by wooden building blocks, art supplies, and board games.
Lily sat beside Caleb, carefully showing him how to color inside the lines of a drawing book, while Noah sat close to Claire’s side, quietly reading a storybook aloud to her.
Miles, the quietest of the three, sat directly in Claire’s lap, resting his head against her shoulder as she gently stroked his hair while reviewing a math worksheet with him.
Mrs. Gable stood in the doorway, tears welling up in her eyes as she watched the children’s laughter echo through the sunlit hall.
"I haven't heard this house ring like this since Mrs. Moretti was alive," Mrs. Gable whispered to Adrian, who stood in the shadows of the mezzanine balcony above, looking down at the courtyard room.
Adrian didn't answer, but his eyes never left Claire.
She was wearing a simple denim shirt and trousers, her hair tied back in a loose pony-tail, her warm laugh rising up toward the high ceilings. She had transformed his cold, forbidding fortress into a home in less than thirty-six hours.
Suddenly, Adrian’s private phone chimed in his pocket. He pulled it out, answering the encrypted line.
"Speak, Marco," Adrian commanded quietly.
Caleb’s voice—his chief security director—came through the line, tense and urgent. "Boss, we traced the Valenti mercenaries from last night. Marco Valenti realized his team failed. He knows you're holding his men. He’s calling an emergency meeting of the five regional directors at the Westchester harbor club at five o'clock today."
Adrian’s jaw tightened. "He wants to claim I broke the territory accord."
"Yes, sir. If he convinces the other directors that you initiated the violence, they will authorize a full syndicate blockade against your shipping docks."
"Prepare the cars," Adrian ordered, his voice turning to ice. "I will address the directors myself."
He hung up the phone and walked down the grand staircase.
As he reached the living room, the children went quiet, looking up at their father with a sudden return of their usual caution.
Adrian stopped near the rug, looking down at Claire. "I have business in the city. I will return before your contract ends at six o'clock tomorrow evening."
Claire stood up, stepping toward him, her brow slightly furrowed with subtle concern. She had seen the sharp shift in his posture; she knew this wasn't ordinary corporate business.
"Stay safe, Adrian," Claire said softly, using his first name for the very first time.
Adrian paused, the sound of his name on her lips sending a warm, powerful jolt through his chest. He looked into her honest, beautiful brown eyes, feeling an urge to pull her into his arms that was so strong it frightened him.

"Take care of my house, Claire," Adrian whispered, his voice carrying a deep, unspoken promise.
He turned and walked out the front doors, flanked by four heavily armed security guards.
