Chapter 2 - The Unseen Shield

Dinner at the Moretti mansion was served at seven o'clock sharp in a dining room that looked like it had been designed for medieval royalty.

A long mahogany table capable of seating twenty people sat beneath a massive crystal chandelier. At the head of the table sat Adrian, reviewing a stack of legal documents while eating a plate of grilled steak and vegetables in absolute silence.

The three boys sat along the left side, pushing their food around their plates with sullen expressions.

Claire sat along the right, her six-year-old daughter, Lily, sitting beside her.

Lily was a tiny girl with dark curly hair, wearing a worn yellow sweater. She was holding a small, stuffed velvet bear with one missing button eye. She looked around the giant, shadowy room with wide, frightened eyes, clinging tightly to Claire’s sweater sleeve.

"Is he a king, Mommy?" Lily whispered, pointing a tiny finger toward Adrian.

"No, sweetheart," Claire whispered back, gently cutting a piece of chicken on Lily's plate. "He's just the man who owns the house."

Adrian didn't look up from his papers, but his deep voice echoed across the quiet table. "If she needs more chicken, tell the kitchen. We don't starve guests."

"She’s fine, thank you," Claire said clearly.

Noah suddenly leaned across the table, glaring at Lily. "That bear is ugly. It's missing an eye."

Lily shrank back against Claire, burying her face in her mother's side.

Before Claire could speak, Adrian set his fork down with a loud clack. The sound rang through the room like a gunshot.

"Noah," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying growl. "Apologize."

Noah went rigid, his face turning red, but he stubbornly stared at his plate. "I don't want to."

"Now," Adrian commanded.

"No!" Noah shouted, standing up from his chair. "You don't care about us anyway! You're always working! You hire people to watch us because you don't want to see us!"

Noah turned and sprinted out of the dining room, his footsteps echoing down the long marble corridor. Caleb and Miles immediately stood up, shooting glare at Claire and their father, before running after their brother.

Silence descended upon the room once more, heavy and suffocating.

Adrian didn't chase them. He didn't yell. He simply closed his legal folder, picked up his glass of ice water, and took a slow drink. But Claire saw the slight tremor in his hand before he set the glass back down—a subtle, hidden sign of a father completely overwhelmed by his own failure.

"You should go after him," Claire said quietly.

Adrian’s gray eyes locked onto hers, cold and razor-sharp. "I run a security firm that employs four hundred men, Ms. Donovan. I manage logistics for international shipping corridors. I do not run after six-year-olds throwing tantrums."

"They aren't throwing tantrums, Mr. Moretti," Claire replied, her voice filled with gentle, unyielding defiance. "They are screaming for help. They think you hate them because you look at them and only see their mother's face."

Adrian froze.

The atmosphere in the room turned instantly dangerous. The air grew thin, as if all the oxygen had been sucked out by the sudden, lethal rage radiating off the man at the head of the table.

"You are an employee, Ms. Donovan," Adrian whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "Do not pretend to understand my family."

May you like

"I don't understand your business, Mr. Moretti," Claire said, standing up and taking Lily's hand. "But I understand grief. And if you keep hiding behind those papers, those boys are going to grow up believing that the only way to get your attention is to burn this house to the ground."

Claire picked up Lily and walked out of the dining room, leaving the billionaire mafia boss sitting alone in the cold, cavernous silence of his own grand estate.
