Chapter 6 - The Rose Garden Blooms

Three years later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the Duca estate, painting the sky in brilliant hues of sapphire blue and gold.

The grey, withered rose bushes in the side garden—the ones that had stood dead and thorn-choked for years—were no longer withered. Long green stems climbed elegantly up new wooden trellises, heavy with vibrant, crimson-red roses that filled the afternoon air with a sweet, intoxicating scent.

A sleek black sedan rolled smoothly through the open iron gates, but it was no longer accompanied by armed tactical escorts. The heavy atmosphere of fear that had once draped over the grounds like a funeral shroud was entirely gone.

Nine-year-old Lucas Duca ran across the lush green lawn, his legs strong, healthy, and full of boundless energy. He wore a crisp white polo shirt and dark shorts, his cheeks flushed with a healthy rosy glow.

"Leo! Stop running so fast! You're going to drop the basket!" Lucas called out, laughing heartily as he chased after a tiny figure in a bright yellow sundress.

Six-year-old Leo turned around, her chestnut curls bouncing in the sunlight, holding a small wicker basket filled with freshly cut red roses.

"Can't catch me, slowpoke!" Leo giggled, her bright brown eyes dancing with endless mischief.

On the grand marble terrace overlooking the gardens, Lorenzo Duca stood leaning against the balustrade, holding a cup of hot espresso.

He looked younger, relaxed, and entirely transformed. The dark circles beneath his eyes were gone, the harsh, severe lines of his face softened by peace. He wore an open-collared white linen shirt, his dark eyes watching the two children playing on the lawn with profound warmth.

Soft footsteps sounded behind him.

Elena walked out onto the terrace, wearing an elegant ivory summer dress that caught the warm breeze. Her dark hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, and on her left ring finger, a massive, emerald-cut diamond ring sparkled brightly under the sun.

Lorenzo set his coffee cup down on the stone table, turned around, and wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

"You're staring at the garden again, Mrs. Duca," Elena murmured playfully, resting her hands against his broad chest.

"I'm staring at my life," Lorenzo whispered, leaning down to press a deep, tender kiss against her lips. "I was thinking about the night you walked into this house with a wet coat and a toddler hiding under your arm."

Elena smiled, her fingers gently tracing the sharp jawline that she had come to love so deeply. "You tried to throw us out into the rain, remember? You looked like a terrifying villain."

"And you looked like a brave mother who was ready to fight a dragon for her child," Lorenzo murmured, his dark eyes shining with intense devotion. "I didn't know it then... but when your daughter walked into my son's room, she didn't just save Lucas. She saved me too."

Across the lawn, Lucas finally caught up with Leo, gently taking her hand as they walked together toward the rose garden to lay a fresh bouquet of crimson roses at the foot of a small, beautiful marble bench dedicated to Isabella's memory.

Lucas looked up at the sunny sky, holding Leo's small hand tightly in his own.

He no longer heard the mechanical pip... pip... pip... of a hospital monitor. He no longer smelled the cold, sterile tang of antiseptic or synthetic lavender.

He heard the warm rustle of summer leaves, the sweet chirping of birds in the blooming rose bushes, and the happy laughter of a family that had been rebuilt from the ashes of tragedy.

Lorenzo wrapped his arms tighter around Elena, resting his chin on her head as they stood together on the balcony, watching their children play under the golden sun.
