Chapter 4 - The Purging of the Fortress

By dawn, the third floor of the Duca estate was entirely gutted.

Teams of men in full biohazard suits worked round the clock, stripping the toxic emerald wallpaper down to the bare brick, removing every carpet, replacing the air ventilation systems, and destroying every piece of furniture that had absorbed the toxic dust.

Lucas had been safely moved to a bright, sunlit master bedroom on the second floor—a room with massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the south gardens, completely free of chemical contaminants.

The change in the six-year-old boy was nothing short of miraculous.

Within forty-eight hours of breathing clean air, drinking pure distilled water, and stopping the toxic "medications," the blue-grey tint began to fade from Lucas’s skin. The burning pain in his stomach subsided to a dull ache. For the first time in six months, he ate a full bowl of warm chicken broth prepared personally by Elena in the clean downstairs kitchen.

On the third afternoon following the discovery, Lucas sat up in his new bed, supported by plush white pillows.

The heart monitor beside his bed was gone—thrown into the trash by Lorenzo’s orders.

On the rug at the foot of his bed, Leo was sitting cross-legged, happily coloring a picture of a giant yellow sun in Lucas’s notebook using his green and yellow crayons.

"Leo?" Lucas called out softly. His voice was no longer a dry rasp; it carried the warm, faint resonance of a healthy young boy.

Leo looked up, her chubby face beaming. "Yes, sick boy? I mean... Lucas?"

"Can you bring Captain over here?" Lucas asked, pointing to his stuffed bear sitting on the bedside table.

Leo scrambled to her feet, picked up the worn bear with both hands, and toddled over to the bed. She handed Captain to Lucas, then rested her chin on the edge of the mattress, watching him with her big brown eyes.

"Thank you," Lucas whispered, hugging the bear tightly against his chest. He looked at Leo, his dark eyes shining with genuine affection. "My dad said you're a genius."

Leo puffed out her chubby cheeks proudly. "I see tiny things! Mommy says I got hawk eyes!"

A soft laugh—a real, childlike laugh—escaped Lucas’s lips. It was a sound that hadn't echoed through the corridors of the Duca estate since his mother had died.

Outside the door, standing in the shadow of the hallway, Lorenzo Duca stood quietly, watching the two children through the glass panel.

Elena walked up behind him, carrying a silver tray with a plate of fresh apple slices and two glasses of organic apple juice.

"He laughed," Lorenzo said softly, without turning around. His voice was filled with a deep, quiet awe. "I haven't heard him laugh in three years, Elena."

Elena smiled warmly, standing beside the powerful man. "Children are resilient, Mr. Duca. Once you remove the poison, the body knows how to heal itself."

Lorenzo turned his head to look at Elena.

She looked vastly different from the terrified maid who had dropped to her knees three nights ago. Her dark hair was neatly styled, her simple grey apron replaced by a soft navy wool dress. There was a quiet dignity and strength in her eyes that Lorenzo found increasingly hard to ignore.

"Call me Lorenzo," he said quietly.

Elena blinked, surprised. "Sir?"

"You and your daughter saved my legacy," Lorenzo said, taking the silver tray from her hands and setting it on a nearby table. "You freed my son from a slow death. 'Mr. Duca' is for men who fear me. You are family now."

Elena’s heart fluttered slightly at the word family. "Lorenzo... what about the people who did this? Have you found them?"

Lorenzo’s expression instantly hardened, the warmth in his eyes vanishing into an abyss of cold, lethal calculation.

"Dr. Cole finished tracing the supply chain of the wallpaper," Lorenzo said, his tone dropping an octave. "It was imported four years ago from a boutique supplier in Milan. The supplier was acquired six months before my wife’s death by a shell company owned by Matteo Moretti."

Elena gasped softly. "The Moretti cartel?"

"Matteo Moretti thought he was brilliant," Lorenzo whispered, his jaw tightening. "He killed my wife in that car explosion three years ago. When he realized that losing Isabella didn't break me or make me step down from the East Coast syndicate, he set up a secondary trap. He placed the toxic paper in my house, paid off the medical supply company to lace the water, and hired Nurse Higgins to keep Lucas sick until he died."

Lorenzo reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek black satellite phone.

"He wanted to break my spirit piece by piece," Lorenzo continued, his voice terrifyingly calm. "He wanted to watch me watch my son die, knowing I was powerless to stop it."

"What are you going to do?" Elena asked, her eyes searching his dark face.

May you like

Lorenzo looked through the glass panel at Lucas, who was currently showing Leo how to draw a star in his notebook.

"Tonight," Lorenzo said softly, "the Moretti family ceases to exist."
