Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Trap and the Sky-High Confrontation

At 01:45 PM, the glass-and-marble atrium of the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis was packed with reporters, corporate executives, and onlookers.

Marcus Croft had called an emergency press conference on the courthouse steps, surrounded by four members of Hawthorne Robotics’ board of directors.

Croft stood before a bank of television microphones, wearing a dark blue suit, looking solemn and deeply concerned.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Croft announced into the microphones, his voice dripping with practiced, hypocritical tragedy. "It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that our beloved CEO, Camille Hawthorne, has suffered a severe emotional relapse related to her tragic accident four years ago. Today, she abruptly cancelled our critical defense flight to Detroit and made wild, paranoid accusations against our engineering staff."

In the gallery behind the press line, Margaret Ellis stood alongside attorney Victor Vance, holding a leather handbag, looking pleased and confident.

"Furthermore," Croft continued smoothly, "we have learned that her newly hired private pilot, Mr. Daniel Mercer, has demonstrated severe negligence, bringing his young child to a secure airfield. For the safety of the company, the board will convene an emergency vote at two o'clock to strip Ms. Hawthorne of her executive authority and appoint an interim management team."

"Is that so, Marcus?"

A voice like a silver blade cut through the echoing atrium.

The crowd of reporters gasped and parted down the middle.

Rolling smoothly through the center of the marble floor came Camille Hawthorne. She wore a stunning royal-blue suit, her posture regal and uncompromising.

Flanking her left side was Daniel Mercer, dressed in his crisp, immaculate pilot’s uniform, holding six-year-old Sophie securely in his left arm.

Flanking her right side were six armed special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent-in-Charge Robert Vance.

Marcus Croft’s face went dead white. His hands began to tremble against the wooden podium. "Camille... what is the meaning of this spectacle? You are supposed to be at the airfield—"

"I am right where I belong, Marcus," Camille said, her wheelchair coming to a stop ten feet from the podium. "And so are federal authorities."

Margaret Ellis pushed her way forward through the reporters, pointing an angry finger at Daniel. "Daniel! What are you doing here with Sophie?! You are supposed to be in Courtroom 402 for the custody petition!"

"The custody petition is dead, Margaret," Daniel said, his voice ringing with absolute authority as he looked his mother-in-law straight in the eye. "Because the attorney you hired—Victor Vance—was paid two hundred thousand dollars in illegal offshore wire transfers by Marcus Croft to fabricate evidence against me."

Margaret froze, her mouth dropping open in utter shock. She whirled around to look at Attorney Vance, whose face had gone completely pale. "What... what are you talking about?!"

Special Agent Vance stepped forward, pulling a stack of federal arrest warrants from his coat.

"Marcus Croft," Agent Vance announced in a booming voice that echoed off the high marble ceiling. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement of three hundred and fifty million dollars, and the first-degree murder of Samuel Hawthorne."

"This is absurd!" Croft shrieked, his suave demeanor instantly shattering into pathetic, desperate panic. "You have no evidence! This is a bitter, paranoid crippled woman trying to hold onto power!"

Camille tapped a button on her tablet.

Instantly, the massive digital public display screens mounted in the courthouse atrium flickered to life.

Broadcasting across forty high-definition screens was crystal-clear, 4K security footage from the private hangar at 04:47 AM that morning. The video showed Marcus Croft using a keycard, opening the galley panel of the Gulfstream G650ER, and splicing the military-grade frequency-spoofing kill-switch into the flight control computer.

Beside the video feed, a forensic schematic displayed the identical MAC address matching the kill-switch recovered from Samuel Hawthorne's crashed aircraft four years ago.

The atrium exploded into chaos. Camera flashes blinded the air, reporters shouted questions at the top of their lungs, and the board members instantly backed away from Croft as if he were covered in poison.

"We recovered the device, Marcus," Daniel said, his voice icy and calm. "And the FBI traced the remote transmitter signal directly to the encrypted satellite phone currently sitting in your inside coat pocket."

Croft made a frantic, desperate move to run toward the side exit, but two federal agents tackled him to the marble floor, slamming his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As Croft was dragged away, screaming curses, Margaret Ellis stood frozen in the middle of the atrium, tears spilling down her aged cheeks. She looked at Daniel, then at little Sophie, who was hugging her father’s neck.

Margaret walked slowly over to Daniel, her shoulders slumped, all her arrogant judgment drained away, replaced by profound, devastating remorse.

"Daniel..." Margaret wept softly. "I... I didn't know. They told me you were putting her in danger... I thought I was protecting Rachel’s daughter..."

Daniel looked down at his mother-in-law. The anger in his heart slowly dissolved, replaced by a deep, mature understanding of the grief they had both carried.

"Rachel loved you, Margaret," Daniel said gently. "And Sophie needs her grandmother. But you have to trust me to be her father."

Margaret covered her face with her hands, nodding hysterically. "I'm so sorry, Daniel. I'm so, so sorry..."
