Chapter 4 - The Corporate Web and the Custody Trap

By 09:00 AM, the deception was fully under way.
Under Daniel’s precise instructions, the sabotaged Gulfstream G650ER remained parked inside the secure hangar, its engines silent. Meanwhile, Camille had ordered her private security team to secretly secure every piece of digital surveillance footage from the airport’s perimeter cameras.
The footage confirmed what Sophie had witnessed: at 04:45 AM, Marcus Croft had entered the hangar using a master executive keycard, carrying a yellow leather tool kit, and had spent twelve minutes inside the aircraft's galley.
Inside the hangar's private office, Camille sat behind a secure laptop, working alongside Daniel. Using his old military contacts from his time at Scott Air Force Base, Daniel had reconnected with a former Air Force OSI (Office of Special Investigations) forensic analyst who was now a senior cyber-investigator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Chicago.
"We have the device's unique MAC address," Daniel reported, pointing to the encrypted code he had scanned off the kill-switch module. "My contact ran it through the defense logistics database. That specific frequency-spoofing unit was manufactured by a private defense subcontractor in Ohio named Vanguard Avionics."
Camille’s eyes narrowed as she typed rapidly into her corporate ledger. "Vanguard Avionics... three years ago, Marcus Croft authorized a forty-million-dollar research grant from Hawthorne Robotics to Vanguard. He used our company’s money to build the weapon he used to kill my father."
Suddenly, the glass door of the office rattled.
Line Manager Henderson stepped inside, his face pale, holding a manila envelope stamped with a red legal seal.
"Captain Mercer," Henderson said nervously. "A county sheriff deputy just arrived at the front gate. He served this emergency court summons for you."
Daniel took the envelope, his fingers icy as he tore open the flap.
It was an emergency ex parte petition for temporary child custody, filed in the Hennepin County Family Court.
Attached was a sworn affidavit signed by Margaret Ellis—and co-signed by Marcus Croft’s personal estate attorney, Victor Vance. The document claimed that Daniel Mercer was suffering from severe post-traumatic stress, was financially insolvent, and was putting his six-year-old child in extreme danger by bringing her to "unregulated industrial airfield facilities."
A hearing had been scheduled for 2:00 PM that very afternoon—less than five hours away.
Daniel felt the floor beneath him tilt. "Croft... Croft found out Margaret was looking for a lawyer. He financed her custody petition this morning to create an immediate legal crisis for me. If I am forced to leave the airport to attend this custody hearing, Croft can step in, force a replacement pilot onto the aircraft, or cover up the evidence."
Daniel slammed his fist onto the desk, his eyes burning with helpless rage. "He’s using my daughter against me."
Sophie, sitting on the sofa nearby, looked up from her coloring book, her little face filled with worry as she saw her father's distress. She scrambled up, ran over, and buried her head against Daniel's waist.
"Daddy? Are you sad?" she whimpered.
Daniel dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around his daughter, holding her close, his heart tearing apart. "No, pumpkin. Daddy is right here. Nobody is going to take you away from me. I promise."
Camille watched the scene unfold. For years, she had believed she was fighting her battles alone in a world of ruthless greed. But looking at Daniel and Sophie, she saw a father who would cross through fire to protect his child—the exact same fierce, unconditional love her own father had shown her before his life was stolen.
Camille’s eyes flashed with an absolute, terrifying brilliance.
"He thinks he can play chess with us, Captain Mercer," Camille said, her voice dropping into a register of supreme, commanding power. "He thinks he can use a family court to break you while he steals my company."
Camille reached for her phone and speed-dialed a number.
"Evelyn," Camille said into the receiver. "Connect me directly to Chief Judge Holbrook of the Hennepin County Family Division. Tell her Camille Hawthorne is calling regarding an emergency fraud intervention in her court. And then call the FBI Field Office."

Camille looked down at Daniel, a triumphant smile touching her lips.
"We are not going to defer that custody hearing, Daniel," Camille said. "We are going to bring the entire board meeting, the FBI, and Marcus Croft directly into that courtroom."
