Chapter 3: Scorched Earth

The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in swift, calculated retribution. Elena wasn't just a protective mother; she was a senior auditor at one of the top financial firms in New England. She knew exactly where David’s vulnerabilities lay.
The morning after the arrest, the video of David’s assault went viral on local Boston social media circles. The caption read: “David Vance, VP of Logistics at Apex Corp, showing his true colors at The Copper Lantern.” By noon, Apex Corp issued a public statement terminating David’s employment effective immediately, citing a zero-tolerance policy for violence.
But Elena was far from finished.
She sat at Maya’s kitchen table, surrounded by financial documents that Maya had secretly brought from the house she shared with David. As Maya rested upstairs under the care of a doctor-prescribed sedative, Elena unraveled David’s biggest secret.
"Maya," Elena said softly when her daughter finally walked downstairs later that afternoon. "You told him last night that you pay the mortgage, the groceries, and his bills. Look at this."
Elena slid a stack of bank statements across the table.
David had been gaslighting Maya for years, telling her she was "bad with money" to keep her dependent. In reality, David had been secretly funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars out of their joint marital asset account into a private offshore account under his mother Rebecca’s name. He was planning to drain Maya dry and leave her.
"He was stealing from me?" Maya whispered, her hand flying to her mouth. "While telling me I was worthless?"
"He was," Elena said, her eyes flashing with a cold fire. "But he made a fatal mistake. Because he put the account in Rebecca's name while using your joint marital funds, it constitutes grand larceny and marital asset fraud. I’ve already sent this data to the District Attorney and a top-tier divorce lawyer."
Two days later, David was released on bail, only to find himself locked out of the house. Elena and Maya met him on the driveway, flanked by a fierce legal team and a sheriff's deputy.
Rebecca was there too, her face tight with rage. "You think you're clever, Elena? David will get a new job! We will sue you for defamation!"
"With what money, Rebecca?" Elena asked calmly. "The DA just froze the offshore account. And because of the morality clause in your own husband's trust fund, which you rely on, your association with a domestic abuser has triggered a full review by the trustees. You're being cut off."
Rebecca choked on her breath, clutching her pearls as the reality hit her.

Maya stepped forward, standing taller than she had in years. She looked at the man who had terrified her for a decade. She pulled her wedding ring off her finger and dropped it into the gravel at David’s feet.
"I'm taking the house, David. I'm taking the assets. And you are going to prison," Maya said, her voice steady and powerful. "Get off my property."
