Chapter 2: The Fall of the House of Vance

The restaurant manager finally found his feet, rushing over with two burly line cooks right behind him. "Sir, do not move," the manager barked at David, his face pale with fury. "The police are on their way. If you attempt to leave, my staff will restrain you."

David’s face shifted from smug arrogance to a sickly, mottled green. He looked around the dining room, but the "high society" peers he always tried so hard to impress were staring at him with undisguised disgust. Several diners were already filming him on their phones.

"Elena, you’re ruining everything!" Rebecca hissed, her pearls clinking as she stood up, trying to shield her son. "This is a private family matter! Tell the police it was a misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding?" Elena echoed, her voice cutting through the room like a diamond blade. She bypassed Rebecca entirely and knelt beside Maya, wrapping her arms around her trembling daughter. "You clapped, Rebecca. The entire room saw you clap for a monster. There is no misunderstanding here."

Within ten minutes, the sharp wail of sirens cut through the Boston night. Four police officers burst through the doors of The Copper Lantern.

David tried to smooth down his jacket, putting on his best corporate smile. "Officers, thank goodness you're here. My mother-in-law is having some sort of hysterical episode. My wife just had a small slip, and—"

"He pulled her hair and shoved her head down, officer," a voice called out from a neighboring table. It was a well-dressed older man. "We all saw it. He assaulted her."

"I have it on video," another diner added, holding up her phone.

The primary officer didn't even look at David. He walked straight to Maya. "Ma'am, do you want to press charges?"

Maya looked at David. For a split second, that old, conditioned fear flickered in her eyes. David gave her a micro-nod—a silent, threatening command to stay silent. But then Maya looked at Elena. She saw the fierce, unyielding love in her mother's eyes.

Maya swallowed hard, wiped a tear from her cheek, and looked the officer dead in the eye. "Yes. I want him arrested."

The metallic click of handcuffs echoing through the refined dining room was the sweetest sound Elena had ever heard. David began shouting, his dignity completely fracturing as he was marched out past dozens of flashing phone cameras. Rebecca scurried after them like a rat leaving a sinking ship, screaming about lawyers and reputation.

Elena led Maya out the back exit, away from the spectacle. As they breathed in the crisp night air, Maya collapsed into her mother's arms, sobbing—not out of sadness, but from the sheer, overwhelming shock of finally being free.
