Chapter 6 - The Hospital and the Turning Point

With the police securing the property and issuing trespassing citations to our freeloading relatives, I drove straight to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. The ER doctors immediately admitted Frederick, diagnosing him with a severe case of acute bronchitis and high-grade dehydration.

Sitting in the sterile hospital room under the hum of fluorescent lights, I watched the IV drip slowly rehydrate my baby boy. Amy sat beside his crib, her head resting gently against the plastic rail, finally breathing a sigh of relief now that the immediate danger had passed.

“I’m sorry, Connor,” Amy whispered, her voice rough. “I should have told you sooner about how your mother was treating me. I just... I didn't want to cause family drama.”

I reached across the gap, wrapping my hand around hers, kissing her knuckles softly. “You never have to hide anything from me again, Amy. We are a team. And what happened today is never, ever going to happen again.”

While Amy rested, I pulled out my phone and contacted my corporate attorney, specialized in estate fraud and property law. I sent high-resolution digital scans of the forged quitclaim deeds and power-of-attorney forms Mason had tried to steal.

My lawyer’s response came back within minutes: “Connor, this is an open-and-shut case of grand larceny, forgery, and elder/domestic coercion. With the police report and these physical documents, your mother and her accomplices are facing severe felony charges. They won't just fail; they’re heading straight to prison.”

A profound sense of cold, unyielding resolve settled over me. For years, I had allowed my mother to manipulate my boundaries under the guise of family loyalty. That era was over.
