Chapter 5 - The Folder of Betrayal

As Teresa screamed obscenities at the top of her lungs, claiming she was a victim of police brutality, something strange happened near the side gate.

My cousin Mason—who had been lurking quietly near the patio exit throughout the entire confrontation—suddenly turned on his heel and sprinted toward the alleyway, tightly clutching a thick, manila leather-bound folder under his arm.

“Stop right there! Police!” one of the backup officers shouted, taking off after him.

Mason didn't get ten feet before the officer tackled him neatly onto the manicured lawn, pinning him to the grass and snatching the leather folder from his grip.

Breathless and disheveled, the officer marched Mason back up the driveway and handed the recovered folder directly to me. “Mr. Bradley, your cousin was trying to sneak away with this document case. Thought you might want to see what’s inside.”

My hands shook slightly as I unbuckled the leather flap and pulled out the crisp, official paperwork.

It wasn't just a random file. It was the original, master property deed to my house, along with a stack of fraudulent power-of-attorney forms, forged bank transfer authorizations, and legal quitclaim deeds designed to sign my entire estate over to my mother and uncle behind my back.

The three thousand dollars I had been sending her every month? It wasn't going toward groceries or baby bills. It was funding the legal fees for a premeditated plot to legally strip me of my home and leave Amy and me destitute.

I looked up from the folder, staring directly at my mother, who had stopped screaming and was now staring pale-faced at the leather case in my hands.

The truth was finally laid bare in the bright afternoon light. That birthday party hadn't been about celebrating my son at all. It was meant to be a victory celebration—the day they officially locked me out of my own life.
