Chapter 4 - The Sovereign Override

The hallway inside was completely transformed. All of their personal belongings—Vivian’s antique vases, Ethan’s golf clubs, their family portraits—had vanished, replaced by minimalist, high-end corporate decor.

Standing in the center of the grand foyer wasn't a weeping, broken Grace.

It was me.

I was standing tall, dressed in a flawless, tailored cream-colored pantsuit, my hair styled perfectly, my expression completely unreadable. Standing on either side of me were two burly, uniformed private security officers from Titan Tech, their hands resting firmly on their utility belts.

Beside them stood Clara Hastings, holding a leather briefcase.

"Grace?!" Ethan gasped, his eyes darting frantically from me to the security guards. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why did you change the locks? And who are these people?!"

"Hello, Ethan. Hello, Vivian," I said, my voice cutting through the warm afternoon air like a razor blade. "I hope you enjoyed Miami. The weather looked beautiful on the news."

"How dare you!" Vivian shrieked, pushing past her son and pointing a manicured finger directly at my face. "You ungrateful little brat! You change the locks on my son's house?! Do you know who funded that luxury lifestyle you’re parading around in? Get these thugs out of our hallway this instant, or I will have Ethan throw you out on the street with that bastard child of yours!"

"My child is a legitimate heir, Vivian," I said softly, stepping forward. The security guards instantly shifted, matching my pace, creating an impenetrable wall of muscle between the Harringtons and my home. "And as for who funded this house... I suggest you check your bank notifications before you make yourself look any stupider than you already do."

Ethan’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. Then Vivian’s.

With trembling hands, Ethan pulled out his screen. A massive, red alert from his banking app filled the glass: ACCOUNT TERMINATED. LIQUIDATION COMPLETE VIA COURT ORDER CASE #4402.

"No... no, no," Ethan stammered, his knees visibly shaking as he dropped his car keys onto the stone step. "The joint account... it’s at zero. My personal savings... gone. Grace, what did you do?! That’s my money!"

"That was my corporate salary, Ethan. The money you used to buy your mother’s seven-thousand-dollar tan," I said, my voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register. "Seven days ago, I lay on this very floor, bleeding and screaming in active labor, begging you to call 911. And you looked me in the eye, turned a key, and locked me in the dark so you wouldn't miss a flight."

"Grace, I... I didn't know it was that serious!" Ethan wept, taking a desperate step forward, his hands reaching out to me. "Mom told me you were exaggerating! I was panicked! Please, sweetheart, let’s talk about this inside! Where is our baby? Let me see my child!"

"You don't have a child, Ethan," Clara Hastings spoke up, stepping forward and handing him a thick, legally certified dossier. "As of 9:00 AM yesterday, a family court judge signed an immediate termination of your parental rights based on overwhelming evidence of severe medical neglect and reckless endangerment. The smart-home video footage of you locking an active-labor mother inside a secure property has already been submitted to the District Attorney."

Vivian’s jaw dropped. The fierce, high-society matriarch looked like a deflated balloon. "Video... video footage?"

"Every corner of this house records in 4K, Vivian," I smiled, though there was no warmth in my eyes. "I am the Director of Operations at Titan Tech. Did you really think I wouldn't have backup servers?"
