Chapter 7

Dinner with Daniel was... nice.

We went to a small Italian restaurant we used to go to when we were first dating. Back when things were simple. Back before Evelyn had moved in and taken over our lives.

We talked about everything and nothing.

He told me about his therapy. About how he was learning to set boundaries. About how he'd started working with his father in the family business, doing things his own way.

I told him about the plans I'd been making. About going back to school. About getting my degree in graphic design, something I'd put on hold when we got married.

"You should do it," he said, his eyes lighting up. "You're so talented. I still have those drawings you used to make. They're incredible."

I smiled. I hadn't thought about those drawings in years.

We didn't talk about Evelyn. We didn't talk about the wedding ring. We didn't talk about the future.

We just... talked.

And for the first time in a long time, I felt like I was talking to the boy I'd fallen in love with.

After dinner, he walked me to the door.

"Thank you," he said. "For giving me a chance."

"Thank you for being honest," I said.

He stood there for a moment, like he wanted to say more. Then he leaned in and kissed my cheek, gently.

"Goodnight, Emily."

"Goodnight, Daniel."

He walked away. I stood at the door and watched him go.

Something inside me had shifted.

The anger was still there. The hurt was still there. But it was softer now. Less sharp.

Maybe, just maybe, there was a chance.

Over the next few months, we saw each other regularly. Coffee. Dinner. Long walks in the park.

He never pressured me. He never pushed for more than I was ready to give.

He just... showed up.

Every single day.

He came to my first day of classes. He brought me flowers. He sat in the back of the lecture hall and smiled at me.

He helped me study for exams. He brought me soup when I was sick. He listened when I was frustrated.

And slowly, very slowly, I started to trust him again.

One evening, we were sitting in the backyard, watching the sunset. The garden was beautiful, full of flowers I'd planted myself.

"Emily," Daniel said softly.

I turned to look at him.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box.

My breath caught.

He opened it.

Inside wasn't my old wedding ring.

It was a new ring. Simple. Elegant. A small diamond set in a thin gold band.

"I know I don't have the right to ask you this," he said, his voice shaking. "I know I have so much to make up for. And I know you might say no. But I had to try."

He took my hand.

"I love you, Emily. I love the person you are. I love how strong you are. How kind. How brave. And I want to spend the rest of my life making it up to you. I want to be the husband you deserve. The one who protects you. The one who chooses you. Always."

He looked me in the eye.

"Will you marry me? Again?"

Tears filled my eyes.

I looked at the ring. It was beautiful. But it wasn't the ring that mattered.

It was the man holding it.

The man who had grown. Who had changed. Who had fought for me.

I thought about Christmas night. About the slap. About the soup. About lying on the floor, completely alone.

I thought about the months that followed. About the strength I'd found. About the family I'd gained in Robert. About the man Daniel was becoming.

"Yes," I whispered.

His face broke into a smile. A real, genuine smile that lit up his entire face.

"Really?"

"Really," I said, laughing through my tears.

He slipped the new ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

He pulled me into his arms and kissed me.

For the first time in a long time, I felt completely safe.

Completely loved.

That night, I moved back into our bedroom.

It felt different. Lighter.

May you like

Daniel held me all night.

And for the first time in years, I slept without fear.
