Chapter 4

The next few days were a whirlwind.
Robert's lawyer arrived, a sharp, intelligent woman named Sarah. She went over all the documents with us.
The house was definitely in Robert's name alone.
The bank records showed Evelyn had been slowly moving money from their joint accounts into secret accounts of her own. Over three years, she'd taken nearly half a million dollars.
And then there were the statements from the household staff. The cook, the housekeeper, the gardener. All of them had seen Evelyn mistreat me. All of them were willing to testify.
"She doesn't have a leg to stand on," Sarah said, closing her folder. "We can file for divorce on the grounds of cruelty and financial misconduct. She'll get almost nothing. And we can file a restraining order on Emily's behalf, preventing her from coming near you or contacting you."
I nodded. The thought of Evelyn being forbidden from coming near me made me feel lighter.
"Do it," I said.
Sarah smiled. "I'll have the paperwork filed by the end of the day."
That afternoon, I went to the hospital to have my hand checked. The doctor confirmed it was a second-degree burn. He gave me stronger pain medication and changed the bandages.
"It should heal well," he said. "But you'll have a scar. I'm sorry."
I looked at my bandaged hand.
A scar.
A permanent reminder of Christmas night.
But I found I didn't mind as much as I thought I would.
The scar would be proof that I'd survived.
Proof that I'd walked away.
When I got home, Daniel was waiting for me on the porch.
He stood up when he saw me.
"How's your hand?" he asked.
"The doctor says it'll be okay," I said, walking past him toward the door.
He followed me inside.
"I talked to Mom," he said.
I stopped and turned to him.
"And?"
"She's furious," he said. "She says Dad is trying to ruin her. She says you manipulated him."
I let out a bitter laugh. "Of course she does."
"I don't believe her," Daniel said quickly. "Not anymore. I've been thinking. About everything. About the last two years. About how she treated you. About how I let her."
He ran his hand through his hair.
"I was so afraid of disappointing her," he said. "She's always controlled everything. My father, the business, me. I just wanted her approval. And I lost myself in the process. I lost you."
He took a step toward me.
"I went to see a therapist yesterday," he said. "I'm going to keep going. I need to figure out how to be my own person. How to be the man you deserve."
I looked at him. Really looked at him.
For the first time, I saw something different in his eyes. Not weakness. Not fear.
Determination.
"That's good, Daniel," I said. "For you."
He nodded. "I know you need time. And I'm going to give it to you. No pressure. No demands. I just... I wanted you to know I'm trying."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out my wedding ring again. But this time, he didn't hold it out to me.
"I'm going to hold onto this," he said. "For when you're ready. If you're ever ready. And if you're not..." He swallowed hard. "I'll understand. I just want you to be happy. Even if it's not with me."
He turned and walked to the door.
"I'll be around," he said. "If you need anything. Anything at all."
He left.
I stood in the hallway, my hand pressed to my chest.
For the first time, I allowed myself to imagine it.
A future with Daniel. But a different Daniel. A stronger one. One who would stand up for me. One who would choose me.
But I also allowed myself to imagine something else.
A future without him.
A future where I was on my own. Free. Independent.
Both possibilities scared me. Both possibilities excited me.
That evening, Robert found me in the living room, staring at the Christmas tree. The ornaments still glowed, but they felt different now. Less like a symbol of perfection, more like... just decorations.
"Penny for your thoughts," he said, sitting down beside me.
"I was just thinking about the future," I said.
"Scary, isn't it?" he said. "But also exciting. For the first time in a long time, you get to choose what happens next."
He was right.
For two years, my life had been dictated by Evelyn's demands. By Daniel's fear. By the expectations of a family that had never really accepted me.
Now, everything was open.
"What about you?" I asked. "What happens now with you and Evelyn?"
Robert sighed. He looked at the tree, his eyes distant.
"I loved her once," he said. "A long time ago. But she changed. Money changed her. Power changed her. She became someone I didn't recognize."
He looked at me.
"I should have left her years ago. But I stayed for Daniel. I thought a broken home would be worse than an unhappy one. I was wrong."
He reached over and squeezed my hand.
"We're both getting a fresh start, Emily. And whatever you choose—whether it's Daniel, or someone else, or just you—I'll be here. You're family to me. Always."
Tears filled my eyes.
May you like
Family.
For the first time in my life, I actually felt like I belonged.
