Chapter 3 - The Unannounced Eviction

At 10:45 AM, three sleek black Sheriff’s cruisers pulled up to the stone gates of our Providence estate, followed closely by my father’s car.

The house looked beautiful from the outside—a grand, four-thousand-square-foot colonial sitting on two acres of pristine, snow-covered land. Smoke rose gently from the chimney. Andrew’s luxury German sedan and Vanessa’s red sports car were parked comfortably in the circular driveway.

They were inside, completely oblivious to the hurricane heading their way.

Deputy Miller led the way up the front steps, flanked by three armed deputies. My father and I stood right behind them.

Miller raised his heavy fist and slammed it against the thick oak front door.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

"Sheriff's Office! Open the door immediately!" Miller’s voice echoed across the quiet neighborhood.

A moment of silence passed. Then, the heavy brass peephole opened.

A few seconds later, the door swung open. Andrew stood there wearing a silk robe, holding a mug of coffee. His face instantly flushed with anger when he saw me standing behind the uniformed officers.

"Hannah? What the hell is this?" Andrew demanded, glaring at me with absolute contempt. "I told you, you are not allowed on this property without my—"

"Andrew Collins?" Deputy Miller interrupted, stepping directly into Andrew's personal space and forcing him to step back into the foyer.

"Yes, I am Andrew Collins! Who are you to bark orders at me in my own home?" Andrew snapped arrogantly. "Do you know who my family's legal team is? I will have your badge for—"

"Mr. Collins, keep your mouth shut and listen to me," Deputy Miller growled, pulling a thick stack of court documents from his jacket and shoving them against Andrew's chest. "I am serving you with an Emergency Order of Protection, a Sole Custody Order, and an Emergency Writ of Exclusive Occupancy issued by Judge Eleanor Vance of the Family Court."

Andrew blinked, looking at the papers in confusion. "What? That's impossible! I haven't been served a court date!"

"You don't get a court date when you lock a baby out in a blizzard, son," Miller said coldly. "As of ten minutes ago, this property belongs exclusively to your wife, Hannah Bennett. You, and everyone inside this house, have precisely twenty minutes to pack your personal essentials and vacate the premises."

"What?!" Andrew’s voice cracked into a high-pitched shriek. "Vacate my own house?! This is a mistake! My mother’s trust owns this home!"

"If you have a problem with the deed, take it up with the judge," Calvin stepped forward, his tone smooth as ice. "In the meantime, Andrew, if you are still standing on this threshold in nineteen minutes, Deputy Miller will arrest you for felony trespass and contempt of court."

At that moment, Margaret Collins stepped out from the formal dining room, wearing an expensive wool cardigan, flanked by Vanessa Reed, who was wrapped in a designer blanket.

"Andrew, darling, what is all this noise?" Margaret asked, pausing when she saw four armed deputies standing in her foyer. Her eyes landed on me, and her expression turned instantly venomous. "Hannah! What kind of sick game are you playing? How dare you bring police into our family home!"

"Mrs. Collins," Deputy Miller turned his stern gaze toward Margaret. "Are you Margaret Collins?"

"I am!" Margaret said proudly, puffing out her chest. "And I demand you remove these people from my property immediately!"

"Mrs. Collins, you are named in this Restraining Order," Miller said, taking a step toward her. "You are ordered to remain five hundred yards away from Mrs. Bennett at all times. If you take another step toward her, I will put you in handcuffs right now in front of your son."

Margaret gasped, her hand flying to her throat as if she had been slapped. Her face went entirely pale. "Handcuffs?! You wouldn't dare! I am a member of the Providence Historical Society!"

"I don't care if you're the Queen of England, ma'am," Miller replied flatly. "You have eighteen minutes left. Start packing."

Vanessa Reed looked terrified. She clutched her designer blanket tighter around herself and looked at Andrew. "Andrew... what is going on? You told me she had no legal rights! You said this house was completely yours!"

Andrew’s face was a horrifying mixture of rage, embarrassment, and panic. He looked at the deputies, then at my father, and finally at me. For the first time since I had met him, the polished, confident, arrogant facade had completely shattered.

"Hannah..." Andrew stammered, stepping toward me with his hands raised defensively. "Hannah, please. Let's be reasonable. We don't need to do this in front of the police. We can talk about this like adults—"

"We tried talking on Christmas Eve, Andrew," I said, looking him dead in the eye, feeling zero hesitation, zero regret, and zero fear. "You made your choice when you locked that door. Now get out of my house."

"Fifteen minutes, Mr. Collins," Deputy Miller announced, pulling out his handcuffs with a loud, metallic clink. "And I suggest you start with your shoes."
