Chapter 2 - The Emergency Injunction

At 8:30 AM on December 26th—the day after Christmas—the Providence Family Court opened its doors for emergency proceedings.
While the rest of the city was slowly waking up from the holiday break, my father and I sat inside the quiet, polished-wood courtroom of Judge Eleanor Vance.
Judge Vance was a sharp, formidable woman in her late fifties, known throughout the state for her zero-tolerance policy toward domestic abuse and child endangerment. She sat at her high bench, reviewing the emergency petition my father had filed at dawn.
"Mr. Bennett," Judge Vance said, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "You are requesting an Ex Parte Emergency Order of Protection and an Immediate Writ of Assistance for Property Possession against Mr. Andrew Collins?"
"I am, Your Honor," Calvin said, standing tall at the plaintiff's table. "My client, Hannah Bennett, was illegally evicted from her marital home on Christmas Eve in sub-zero weather with an eighteen-month-old child. Furthermore, the defendant has changed the locks, brought an unauthorized third party into the residence, and threatened my client with baseless legal action."
"Is Mr. Collins or his legal counsel present?" Judge Vance asked, looking around the empty gallery.
"We served his attorney, Mr. Richard Vance—no relation to Your Honor—with notice of this emergency hearing two hours ago," Calvin replied. "They declined to attend, claiming the filing was 'frivolous.'"
Judge Vance’s eyebrows rose. A dangerous chill entered her tone. "They called an emergency family court petition 'frivolous'?"
"They did, Your Honor," Calvin said calmly. "They also claimed my client left the home voluntarily. With your permission, I would like to submit Exhibit A—a verified, timestamped 4K video recording captured by a neighboring property's security system on the night of the incident."
Calvin handed a flash drive to the bailiff, who plugged it into the court’s multimedia system.
The courtroom screens illuminated. For the next three minutes, Judge Vance watched the night-vision footage in complete silence. She watched Margaret shove the trash bags onto the snow. She watched Vanessa drink champagne. She listened to Andrew’s cruel voice booming through the storm: “Take your trash and get off my property!” She watched me stumble down the frozen steps carrying my weeping daughter.
As the video ended, Judge Vance’s face was stone. Her jaw was set so tightly a muscle twitched in her cheek.
"Mr. Bennett," Judge Vance said, her voice trembling with restrained outrage. "Is that child currently safe?"
"She is, Your Honor. She is at my home under my direct care," Calvin answered.
Judge Vance picked up her pen and began signing documents with furious, sharp strokes.
"This court finds clear, convincing, and unrefuted evidence of severe child endangerment, illegal self-help eviction, and bad-faith conduct," Judge Vance declared, her voice booming across the room. "I am granting the following emergency orders, effective immediately:"
She slammed her gavel down once.
"First: A Temporary Restraining Order is issued against Andrew Collins and Margaret Collins. They are to remain a minimum of five hundred yards away from Hannah Bennett and Lily Collins at all times."
Snap.
"Second: Full, temporary sole legal and physical custody of Lily Collins is awarded exclusively to Hannah Bennett. Andrew Collins is granted zero visitation rights pending a full psychological evaluation and a formal court hearing."
Snap.
"Third: An immediate Writ of Exclusive Occupancy is issued for the marital residence in Providence. Andrew Collins and any unauthorized occupants—specifically Ms. Vanessa Reed—are ordered to vacate the premises within two hours of being served."
Judge Vance looked directly at my father and me.
"Mr. Bennett, I am dispatching four Sheriff's deputies to accompany you and your daughter to the residence to enforce this writ personally. If Mr. Collins or his associates offer even a hint of resistance, the deputies have full authority to place them in handcuffs on the spot."
"Thank you, Your Honor," Calvin said, bowing his head gracefully.
I sat back in my chair, my heart pounding against my ribs. In less than forty-five minutes, the terrifying power Andrew thought he held over my life had been completely dismantled by the cold, unyielding truth of the law.
As we walked out of the courtroom, four uniform Sheriff's deputies were waiting for us in the marble hallway.

The lead deputy, a broad-shouldered sergeant named Miller, adjusted his belt and looked at my father. "Mr. Bennett, we have the signed court orders. We're ready when you are."
Calvin looked at me, a sharp, fierce gleam in his eyes. "Hannah, grab your coat. It’s time to go back to your house."
