Chapter 5 - The Masterpiece of Revenge

A sharp, deafening bang shattered the glass windows behind Daniel—but it didn't come from his gun.

The heavy, reinforced glass of the penthouse suite exploded inward in a spectacular cascade of glittering shards. Three tactical flashbang grenades detonated in rapid succession, filling the crimson-lit room with a blinding, white-hot light and an ear-splitting roar.

Rostov’s armed men screamed, covering their eyes as they stumbled backward in complete disorientation.

Before Daniel could adjust his aim, the heavy double doors of the main entrance burst open. A dozen heavily armored FBI tactical agents poured into the room, their laser sights painting the walls and Daniel’s chest in a web of lethal red dots.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Drop your weapons now!" a booming voice echoed through a megaphone.

Daniel panicked. He turned, attempting to sprint toward the private helipad staircase at the back of the penthouse. But as he turned, I stepped forward, ignoring the white-hot agony tearing through my back, and swung the heavy, solid steel vault wheel directly into his path.

The heavy metal struck his wrist with a sickening crack. Daniel bellowed in pain, his pistol flying out of his hand and skittering across the polished floor, falling straight through the shattered window frame into the dark abyss of the city below.

He collapsed to his knees, clutching his broken wrist, staring up at me with absolute, unadulterated terror.

Federal agents swarmed the room, tackling Rostov’s armed men to the ground within seconds. Federal Prosecutor Vance walked into the room, flanked by Clara Hastings, who was holding a live digital recorder.

"Daniel Vance," the prosecutor said, looking down at the broken architect with deep contempt. "We’ve been monitoring your encrypted communications with Marcus Rostov for the last three hours. We let your extraction team break you out of the precinct specifically so you would lead us to the primary storage vault of Vance Enterprises. You are being charged with federal racketeering, capital homicide, international money laundering, and attempted murder."

Daniel looked up, his eyes wild, darting toward the window. "Rostov... Rostov won't let you do this! He will destroy all of you!"

"Mr. Rostov is currently being detained by federal authorities at the Teterboro airport, trying to board a private jet with ten million dollars in unregistered bonds," Clara said, offering him a satisfied smile. "Your laundering pipeline is completely dismantled, Daniel. You are officially entirely broke."

Daniel’s gaze snapped back to me. He crawled forward on his knees, his face covered in sweat and shattered glass dust, trying to reach the hem of my trench coat. "Charlotte... please. You loved me once. We can fix this. I can give you the truth about your father! I can help you! Don't let them take me away!"

I stood above him, looking down at the pathetic, broken creature who had spent three years trying to convince me I was nothing. The man who had watched his mother pour boiling oil over my skin and worried only about his shoes.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the digital hard drive labeled Project Legacy, and tossed it onto the floor right in front of his face.

"I don't need your help, Daniel," I said, my voice echoing with a chilling, absolute authority. "Because this hard drive doesn't just contain my father's medical records. It contains the complete, unedited blueprints of every single structural flaw you intentionally built into your luxury developments to cut costs and embezzle the difference. The state board of architects revoked your license five minutes ago. Your name is being stripped off every building in this city."

I leaned down, staring directly into his hollow, terrified eyes one final time.

"You didn't marry a victim, Daniel. You married the executioner. And your execution has just begun."

The FBI agents grabbed his arms, dragging him out of the penthouse in heavy chains. As he was pulled into the elevator, his screams of rage and panic echoed down the shaft, fading into nothingness.

I stood alone in the center of the ruined penthouse, the cool night rain blowing through the shattered windows, washing away the scent of smoke, oil, and betrayal.

Clara walked up beside me, gently placing a warm coat over my shoulders. "It's over, Charlotte. You did it. The trust is secure. Your father finally has justice."

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. For the first time in three years, the burning heat on my skin felt less like a wound—and more like a rebirth.
