Chapter 4 - The 24-Hour Countdown

The clock struck midnight. Eight hours remained until Daniel’s arraignment, and the city felt like a pressure cooker waiting to explode.

I was back in the secure war room of Hastings & Associates, surrounded by towering walls of legal documents and glowing computer monitors. Vivian’s written confession lay on the center of the table—a jagged, messy scrawl detailing the exact timeline of how she and Daniel had systematically poisoned my father with digitalis to seize control of his multi-million-dollar real estate trust.

But the most critical piece of evidence was the combination sequence she had given me for the hidden vault inside Daniel’s private architectural studio.

"The vault isn't just a safe, Charlotte," Clara said, pulling up the blueprints of the Vance Enterprises penthouse suite. "It’s a specialized, fireproof security room built directly behind the main display wall. According to the structural logs, it has an independent security grid tied directly to Marcus Rostov’s private network. If we enter that room using Vivian’s combination, an automated silent alarm will instantly alert Rostov’s extraction team."

"Then we make sure the police are already inside the building before the alarm triggers," I replied, fastening the buttons of a dark, heavy trench coat over my bandages.

"Charlotte, you are playing with fire," Lena pleaded, stepping into the room with a fresh kit of medical supplies. "Your vitals are completely unstable. The stress alone could send your body into septic shock from the burn wounds. You need to let the FBI handle this."

"The FBI works on warrants and red tape, Lena. By the time they clear the jurisdictional boundaries to raid a private corporate penthouse tied to an international syndicate, Daniel will be on a private cargo plane to a non-extradition country," I said, looking at my reflection in the dark glass window.

The woman staring back at me didn't look like the broken, submissive housewife who had spent three years enduring psychological abuse. The dark circles under my eyes were sharp, my jawline tense, my eyes burning with a cold, absolute resolve. I had spent too long playing the victim to protect my father's memory. The time for defense was over.

"Clara, call Federal Prosecutor Vance—no relation to Daniel, ironically—and tell him we have a signed confession regarding the homicide of a major federal donor," I directed. "Tell him to meet us at the Vance Enterprises tower in thirty minutes with a tactical squad. But do not tell him we are going inside first."

"Charlotte—"

"Do it, Clara. That’s an order from your senior partner."

Thirty minutes later, the SUV slid to a halt in the underground parking garage of the Vance Enterprises building. The skyscraper towered into the stormy night sky like a monolith of glass and steel, its upper floors shrouded in low-hanging clouds. The building was empty, the late-night cleaning staff having already departed due to the public scandal surrounding the CEO.

I bypassed the main elevators, using the private, keycard-access service elevator that led directly to the penthouse suite. The ride up was excruciating; the rapid change in atmospheric pressure made the burns on my back throb with blinding agony. I gripped the handrail, gritting my teeth until I tasted iron, forcing myself to stay conscious. For my father, I repeated like a mantra. For my father.

The elevator doors chimed open, revealing a sweeping, ultra-modern penthouse office. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the rain-slicked city below. On the main wall hung a massive, stylized blueprint of the Vance family estate—the ultimate symbol of Daniel’s arrogance.

I walked straight to the blueprint, locating the hidden biometric panel concealed beneath the frame. I punched in the complex, sixteen-digit alphanumeric sequence Vivian had written down.

A heavy, mechanical click echoed through the silent office. The entire display wall slid backward, revealing a sleek, steel-reinforced vault door.

I turned the manual wheel, throwing the heavy bolts open.

Inside the vault sat a single, pristine velvet-lined table. Resting on top of it was a high-tech, biometric safety deposit cylinder containing the Zurich vault key, alongside a digital hard drive labeled Project Legacy.

I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the cold steel of the cylinder.

Suddenly, the overhead lights in the penthouse flickered and died, plunging the office into pitch-black darkness. A second later, the emergency red backup lights surged on, casting a crimson, bloody glow across the room.

A slow, rhythmic clapping sounded from the darkness of the elevator lobby.

"Impressive. Truly impressive, Charlotte," a voice purred.

Out of the shadows walked Daniel.

He was no longer wearing his pristine designer suit. He wore a dark, tactical jacket, his hands gloved, his face pale and twisted into a manic, desperate grin. Behind him stood three tall, heavily armed men wearing tactical gear—Marcus Rostov’s extraction team.

"Daniel," I said, keeping my voice steady as I quietly slipped the Zurich cylinder into the deep pocket of my trench coat. "I see you managed to buy your way out of a holding cell early."

"Rostov has very deep pockets, my love," Daniel sneered, taking a step into the red-lit office. The armed men fanned out, cutting off my only exit to the elevator. "Did you really think a pathetic little kitchen camera and a few frozen bank accounts would be enough to destroy me? I built this city. I built our life. And I certainly built the plan that is going to get me out of here."

"Your mother confessed, Daniel," I said, staring directly at him. "She gave me everything. The digitalis, the modified nurse logs, the offshore accounts. She sold you out to save herself."

Daniel’s face twitched for a fraction of a second, a flash of genuine rage crossing his features, before he let out a harsh, barking laugh. "The old fool. She always was weak. It doesn't matter what she signed, Charlotte. Because you aren't leaving this building alive to deliver it."

He gestured to the armed men behind him. "You see, Rostov didn't just agree to break me out. He agreed to clean up the final loose end. Once you're dead, the irrevocable trust automatically transfers to your next of kin—which, according to the legal bylaws you so carefully drafted, is still me until our divorce is finalized in a court of law. And since we haven't even filed the paperwork... your death makes me the sole owner of the thirty million dollars."

He took out a sleek, suppressed pistol from his jacket, pointing it directly at my chest.

"Goodbye, Charlotte," Daniel whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Next time, you should learn to be a better wife."
