Chapter 6 - Dawn over the Valenti Estate

The first rays of golden morning sunlight washed over the rolling green lawns of the Valenti estate, chasing away the shadows of the long, brutal night.

Inside the third-floor private suite, the room was warm, filled with the gentle, sweet scent of fresh coffee and buttered toast.

Elena sat propped up against the pillows of the massive bed, sipping from a porcelain teacup. Though her shoulders were still slightly sore and pale shadows lingered beneath her dark eyes, the color had returned to her cheeks.

Sitting cross-legged at the foot of the bed was Sophie, completely absorbed in coloring a picture of a blue dragon in a brand-new coloring book, her gray stuffed rabbit propped up proudly beside her box of crayons.

The door clicked open softly.

Matteo stepped into the room. He had removed his suit jacket, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the corded muscle and old scars of a man who had fought for every inch of his empire. In his hands, he carried a small silver tray holding a plate of sliced strawberries and a glass of warm milk for Sophie.

Sophie looked up instantly, her face lighting up with a gap-toothed smile.

“Mr. Matteo!” she chirped. “Did you bring my dragon stickers?”

Matteo smiled—a genuine, warm, effortless smile that transformed his intimidating features completely. He walked over, setting the tray down on the bedside table and pulling a colorful sheet of stickers from his pocket, handing them to the little girl.

“Stickers delivered as promised, Captain,” Matteo said softly.

Sophie gasped happily, immediately peeling a sparkling star sticker and pressing it directly onto her rabbit’s forehead. “Look, Mr. Bunny is a sheriff now!”

Elena watched them, a soft, profound warmth swelling in her chest. She looked up at Matteo, her dark eyes shining with quiet emotion.

“Viktor called me an hour ago,” Elena said softly, setting her teacup down. “He said Arthur and Celeste were transferred to federal custody an hour before dawn. No bail. No deals.”

“They won’t be seeing the outside of a maximum-security federal penitentiary for the rest of their natural lives,” Matteo replied calmly, pulling a chair up beside the bed and sitting down. He looked at Elena, his slate-gray eyes softening into something infinitely tender. “And you. How are you feeling?”

“I feel like I woke up from a very long, cold nightmare,” Elena admitted, looking down at her hands resting against the blanket. She hesitated, a shadow of uncertainty crossing her features. “Mr. Valenti... about my job. About the estate. Now that everything’s changed... I understand if you need to let me go. I understand if it’s too complicated to keep me and Sophie here after everything that happened.”

Before she could finish, Matteo reached out.

His large, calloused hand covered hers, stopping her words entirely. His touch was warm, firm, and grounding.

“Elena,” Matteo said, his voice dropping into a rich, resonant baritone that carried absolute conviction. “You are not leaving this house. Not today. Not ever—unless it’s on your own terms.”

Elena’s breath hitched. She looked up into his eyes, seeing no trace of the feared mafia boss, only a man who had finally found what his cold, empty empire had been missing all along.

“You and Sophie are the heart of this estate,” Matteo continued, gently squeezing her hand. “Without you, it’s just a mausoleum of stone and money. I don't want a maid anymore, Elena. And I certainly don't want a society fiancée.”

He leaned in slightly, his gaze locking onto hers with unmistakable intent.

“I want you to stay. As my partner. As my family. If you’ll have us.”

Sophie looked up from her coloring book, her big brown eyes darting between them. She tilted her head, her face lighting up with absolute childhood wisdom.

“Does that mean Mr. Matteo is going to live with us forever, Mommy?”

Elena felt a warm tear spill over her lashes, but this time, it wasn't a tear of fear or sorrow. It was the tears of a mother who had finally found her safe harbor.

She looked back at Matteo, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across her face as she squeezed his hand back.

“Yes, sweetheart,” Elena whispered, resting her head against Matteo’s solid, protective shoulder as the golden morning sunlight flooded the room. “Forever.”
