Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Syndicate

The private medical suite on the third floor of the Valenti estate was quiet, bathed in the soft, warm glow of bedside lamps.

Dr. Sterling, the family’s longtime physician, packed his medical bag, closed it with a soft click, and turned to look at Matteo, who was standing by the window staring out into the dark Westchester gardens.

“She’s going to make a full physical recovery, Mr. Valenti,” Dr. Sterling reported quietly, keeping his voice down so as not to wake Elena, who was resting peacefully in the oversized bed with Sophie curled up fast asleep beside her hip. “Severe dehydration, low blood sugar, and bruising consistent with a struggle and confinement, but no permanent damage. Give her a week of complete rest, proper nutrition, and she’ll be back on her feet.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” Matteo said, nodding dismissal.

As the doctor slipped quietly out of the room, Matteo walked over to the edge of the bed.

The harsh, unrelenting armor he wore every day—the armor required to survive as the head of Boston’s most feared syndicate—felt suddenly heavy and useless in this quiet room. He looked down at Elena’s pale face, remembering the terrifying sight of her crumpled in the dark corner of that vault.

If Sophie hadn't wandered out to the foyer... if she hadn't listened at the floorboards...

A cold shudder ran down Matteo’s spine. For the first time in his life, the billionaire realized that all his money, all his armed guards, and all his territorial control meant absolutely nothing if he couldn't protect the people who truly mattered inside his own home.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Matteo turned, slipping out into the private hallway and pulling the door half-shut behind him.

Standing in the hallway was Viktor, holding a secure encrypted tablet.

“Boss,” Viktor said in a low murmur. “We interrogated Marcus. And we checked the offshore accounts Celeste and her father were managing through the Winthrop Foundation.”

“And?” Matteo asked, his voice flat.

“It goes deeper than we thought,” Viktor said, handing over the tablet. “It’s not just embezzlement. Arthur Winthrop—Celeste’s father—has been quietly selling routing manifests of our Atlantic shipping lanes to the Russian syndicate operating out of Providence. That’s how they ambushed our cargo shipment last month in Boston Harbor.”

Matteo’s eyes flared with a dangerous, dark light.

“Treason,” Matteo whispered.

“Worse,” Viktor replied. “They were using the foundation as a front to launder syndicate money right under our noses. Celeste was helping her father coordinate the logistics from inside your own estate. When Elena started auditing the domestic payroll last week, she stumbled onto the encrypted transfer logs hidden in the staff expense folders. That’s why Celeste targeted her.”

Matteo looked down at the tablet screen, scrolling through the network of shell companies and bank transfers.

“Where is Arthur Winthrop right now?” Matteo asked quietly.

“He’s currently hosting a charity gala at the Boston Harbor Hotel,” Viktor said. “Celebrating the upcoming wedding. He has no idea Celeste’s plan has imploded.”

Matteo handed the tablet back to Viktor. A cold, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of his mouth—the smile of a predator who had just found the rest of the pack.

“Cancel my morning meetings,” Matteo said, straightening his cuffs. “Prepare the helicopter. It’s time we pay Arthur Winthrop a visit at his own party.”

“What about security here?” Viktor asked. “With Celeste locked up in the vault and Marcus in the holding cell, the estate is secure, but—”

“Leave a double detail outside Elena’s room,” Matteo interrupted. “Nobody gets in. Nobody gets out. I’ll be back before sunrise.”
