Chapter 7 - Reconstruction

The transformation of the forty-eighth floor didn't happen overnight, but within three months, the shift was unmistakable.

Elena Hayes no longer wore the faded grey polo shirt. She stood in the main corridor of Cortez Enterprises wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit, a tablet held efficiently in one hand as she directed a crew of twelve newly hired facilities technicians. Her posture had changed; the defensive, rounded shoulders of a woman crushed by poverty had been replaced by the straight, confident lines of an executive who knew her worth.

Her daughter, Mia, was sitting at a small desk in the corner of the main reception lobby, doing her homework under the watchful, surprisingly protective eye of the same security guards she had sneaked past three months prior.

"Ms. Hayes," Alec said, stepping out of the elevator.

Elena turned, a bright, genuine smile breaking across her face—a stark contrast to the terrified woman who had knelt on his rug. "Good morning, Mr. Cortez. The new air filtration manifests for the lower twenty floors are finalized. We managed to cut utility waste by twelve percent this quarter."

"Excellent work," Alec said, pausing to look at her. "I assume the relocation to the apartment on 84th Street went smoothly?"

"It did," Elena said, her voice softening with profound gratitude. "Mia has her own room now. She keeps telling everyone her mom owns the building."

"She isn't entirely wrong," Alec said with a rare, genuine chuckle. "Keep up the good work, Elena."
