Chapter 4 - The Ghost Network

The ride back to the Hayes Holdings tower was silent until the SUV crossed the threshold of the subterranean garage. The adrenaline of the confrontation at the docks was still humming through Clara’s veins, her hands tightly gripping the laptop case. She looked over at Alec, who sat back in the leather seat, his face completely impassive as if he had just attended a routine budget meeting rather than ruining a multi-million-dollar smuggling ring.
"You knew he was doing it before I brought you the files," Clara said, it wasn't a question.
Alec turned his head, his amber eyes catching the dim fluorescent light of the garage. "I knew Rossi was dirty, yes. My father left a dozen little leaks along the waterfront to keep his captains loyal—a little grease in the gears keeps the machinery from grinding. But I needed to know if your new system could detect them without my security team intervention."
"You used me as a test," Clara said, a sharp edge of anger creeping into her voice. "You let me spend thirty-six hours analyzing data just to prove a point to an old man who can barely read a spreadsheet?"
"I used you to prove a point to the board, Clara," Alec corrected her, his voice dropping into that calm, logical register that made it impossible to argue. "The legacy directors still think you're an administrative assistant who got lucky because your daughter found a backdoor into my network. Tonight, you proved that your system can shut down a legacy skimming operation in twenty minutes. Tomorrow morning, the board will vote on your permanent appointment as Chief Technology Officer, and no one will be able to say a word against it."
Clara stared at him, the anger fading into a reluctant respect. He was always three steps ahead, calculating every relationship and every corporate move like a grandmaster on a chessboard. But as she looked closer at his face, she noticed the subtle tension around his eyes—the exhaustion of a man who spent every second of his life maintaining a fortress against the rest of the world.
"And what happens when the next leak isn't an old man like Rossi?" she asked softly, her tone shifting from professional to personal. "What happens when someone from the outside tries to use the system against us?"
"Then we rewrite the system again," Alec said simple, opening his car door. "Go home to your daughter, Clara. The security team will escort you up to your apartment. I have an early meeting with the ironworkers' representative at six."

Clara watched him walk toward the private executive elevator, his long black coat billowing behind him like a shadow. She pulled her phone from her pocket, checking the live nanny-cam app she kept active. On the screen, Mia was fast asleep in her new bedroom, her silver-starred backpack resting on the chair beside her bed. The light-up sneakers were neatly lined up by the door, their little blue bulbs dark for the night.
She took a deep breath, the cold air of the garage filling her lungs. For the first time since her husband had disappeared into the dark underworld of New York’s financial schemes, she didn't feel like a victim running from the shadows. She felt like she was part of the foundation.
