Chapter 6 - The Dawn at Mount Royal

THREE YEARS LATER

The spring air at the summit of Mount Royal in Montreal was crisp, clear, and filled with the scent of blooming lilac and fresh pine.

From the stone lookout terrace, the entire city stretched out below—the glittering Saint Lawrence River, the historic stone buildings of Old Montreal, and the blue sky beyond.

A four-year-old boy with dark, wavy hair and bright brown eyes was running across the stone plaza, laughing as he chased a wooden toy airplane.

"Look, Daddy!" Julian shouted, holding the plane high above his head. "It's flying to the clouds!"

"Keep it away from the trees, buddy!" a voice called out.

Damian Moreland sat on a stone bench nearby.

He looked remarkably different from the man who had burst into the Greenwich hospital three years ago. He wore a simple gray sweater, brown leather boots, and jeans. The cold, ruthless edge in his eyes had softened into a deep, quiet calm. He lived in a quiet stone house near the mountain, spending his days managing a charitable foundation that built housing for domestic violence survivors in Quebec.

He had kept his word.

He had walked away from New York entirely. The Moreland family empire had been restructured into a public utility trust, its illegal arms completely dismantled by federal authorities after Damian quietly handed over key evidence through Malcolm Reed.

Beside Damian on the stone bench sat Claire.

She wore a soft yellow trench coat, her brown hair falling past her shoulders in loose waves. She looked healthy, radiant, and completely at peace. Over the last three years, brick by brick, conversation by conversation, they had rebuilt something entirely new out of the ashes of their past.

They were not the naive young lovers from Queens, nor were they the toxic power couple from Connecticut. They were two people who had walked through hell, faced their worst flaws, and chosen to forge a mature, honest bond grounded in forgiveness and respect.

Julian ran back to the bench, plop-dropping onto the space between them, leaning his small head against Claire’s hip while holding his father’s hand.

"Daddy, can we get ice cream after this?" Julian asked, looking up with big, hopeful eyes.

"Ask your mother," Damian smiled, looking over at Claire with a warm, reverent gaze. "She’s the boss."

Claire laughed—a light, musical sound that filled the spring afternoon. "Only if you finish your broccoli at dinner tonight, young man."

"I promise!" Julian giggled, sliding off the bench to chase a pigeon across the terrace.

Damian reached over, his broad hand gently covering Claire’s on the cold stone bench.

"Thank you," Damian murmured softly, his eyes shining with a deep, quiet emotion.

Claire looked at him, squeezing his fingers in return. "For what?"

"For leaving me," Damian said honestly. "If you hadn't walked out of that hospital three years ago, I would have destroyed everything that mattered. You saved my life, Claire. You saved our family."

Claire looked out over the glittering city of Montreal, at her son playing safely in the spring sunshine, and at the man beside her who had given up an empire just to hold her hand.

"We saved each other, Damian," Claire whispered gently, leaning her head against his shoulder.

The cold winds of Miami and the dark shadows of Connecticut were gone forever.

In their place was the quiet warmth of a spring afternoon, a family reborn out of truth, and a future where no one would ever have to wait alone in the dark again.
