Chapter 3 - The Crack in the Shield

By August, the summer heat had finally penetrated the northern sanctuary of Montreal.

Julian was now six months old. He was a bright, laughing child who had just learned to sit up on his own. He had small, perfect teeth breaking through his gums and a laugh that sounded like tiny silver bells.

Claire sat on a green wooden bench in Parc La Fontaine, holding a small plastic toy while Julian babbled happily in his stroller.

For the first time in nine months, Claire felt a sense of safety. The daily terror of hearing footfalls in the hallway had faded into a manageable background hum. She had established a routine. She worked three hours a day on her laptop doing freelance design for small Canadian businesses, earning enough to pay for their modest rent and groceries without touching the offshore funds Malcolm had set up.

Jenna walked over from a nearby coffee kiosk, holding two iced lattes.

"Malcolm called from a burn phone," Jenna said, sitting beside her sister on the bench. "He says Damian discharged Sabrina Cole from all Moreland subsidiaries three months ago."

Claire didn't look up from Julian’s stroller. "Did he?"

"Not just discharged," Jenna added, her tone carrying a sharp edge of satisfaction. "He ruined her, Claire. He initiated a full audit of her consulting firm, exposed her tax fraud to the IRS, and had her barred from every real estate board in Florida. She’s completely destitute. She had to move back to her parents' house in Ohio."

Claire remained silent for a long moment, watching a yellow butterfly flutter over the grass.

"I don't care about Sabrina," Claire said softly. "Sabrina was just the mirror Damian held up to show me what our life had become. If it wasn't her, it would have been another woman, or another deal, or another property."

"He’s still looking for you," Jenna warned low. "Malcolm says Damian hasn't returned to the Connecticut house since the night you left. He lives out of his office or his plane."

Claire touched Julian’s soft cheek. "He’s looking for his ego, Jenna. Men like Damian don't like losing things that belong to them."

What Claire did not know was that thousands of miles away, an insignificant clerical error was about to shatter her sanctuary.

In a small pediatric clinic in downtown Montreal, a young administrative assistant was processing insurance reimbursement claims.

When Claire had taken Julian for his six-month vaccinations two days earlier, she had paid in cash under the name Clara Vane. However, the clinic’s software automatically checked the baby’s birth date and blood type against a specialized, international private pediatric registry—a registry secretly funded by an intelligence firm on Damian Moreland’s payroll.

A single flag triggered on a server in Virginia at 2:14 PM:

Child: Male. Born Feb 2, 2026. Blood Type: O Negative (Rare). Rare genetic marker present on Factor VIII gene.

Damian Moreland had O Negative blood with the exact same rare Factor VIII marker.

Inside his private jet parked on a runway in Boston, Damian’s phone buzzed with an urgent priority alert.

He picked it up.

A high-resolution image flashed onto his screen: a scanned pediatric intake form from Clinique Médicale Saint-Laurent, Montreal, Quebec.

Below the form was a grainy, high-definition photograph taken by a street surveillance camera outside the clinic two days ago.

It showed a woman with dark brown hair wearing a green coat, carrying an infant wrapped in a blue blanket.

Damian’s breath hitched.

He didn't care about the dark hair. He didn't care about the plain clothes.

He recognized her hands. He recognized the way she held the child against her chest—defensively, fiercely, wrapped in complete love.

"Miller," Damian said, his voice terrifying in its sudden, crystal-clear focus.

Miller stepped out of the cockpit. "Yes, Boss?"

"Tell the pilot to head north," Damian whispered, his eyes glued to the photograph on his screen. "Montreal. We land in forty minutes."
