Chapter 6 - The Corporate Fallout

By Tuesday afternoon, the shockwaves of our impending legal action had already hit Hale & Whitman Consulting.

I received an urgent phone call from one of the senior equity partners at the firm, Arthur Whitman himself. His voice sounded strained, a stark contrast to the booming, confident tone he usually used at annual company galas.

“Claire? It’s Arthur,” he said. “I received a packet from your legal counsel this morning containing security footage and HR complaints regarding Daniel and Vanessa Cole.”

“Arthur,” I replied evenly. “I hope you’re calling to confirm that your firm is taking swift action against the individuals who assaulted a five-year-old child on your premises.”

There was a heavy pause on the other end of the line. “We have launched an immediate internal review. Vanessa Cole’s employment has been terminated effective immediately, with cause. As for Daniel... well, the partners held an emergency board meeting ten minutes ago. His partnership track has been frozen, and he has been placed on indefinite administrative leave pending the outcome of these legal proceedings. Frankly, Claire, what happened is completely unacceptable. We pride ourselves on family values here, and this behavior violates every code of conduct we uphold.”

“I’m glad to hear the firm is taking it seriously,” I said. “Because my attorney is filing criminal charges regarding the assault on my daughter alongside our divorce papers. Daniel made his bed when he brought that woman into our lives and allowed her to terrorize my child.”

“I understand completely,” Arthur sighed. “If there is anything I can do personally to assist you and Mia, please don't hesitate to ask. Daniel acted like a fool, and he is going to pay dearly for it.”

When Daniel realized his professional reputation was evaporating right alongside his marriage, he finally panicked.

That evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, my phone buzzed incessantly with text messages from him.

Daniel: Claire, please, you’re destroying my life. Arthur called me today. They’re freezing my shares. Vanessa is threatening to sue me too because I didn't back her up. Can we please talk? Just give me five minutes.

I looked at the screen, typed a short response, and hit send.

Claire: You had your chance to talk in our hallway, Daniel. Anything else you have to say can be communicated through Victoria Vance.

I blocked his number immediately after.

I walked upstairs to Mia’s bedroom, where she was sitting on her small white bed, coloring a picture of a unicorn with a bright golden horn. She looked up as I walked in, her blue knit hat resting gently on her nightstand while her scalp showed the softest beginnings of new, healthy fuzz.

“Mommy, look! I drew us flying over the rainbow,” she said proudly, holding up the drawing.

I smiled, sitting down beside her and wrapping my arms around her shoulders. “It’s beautiful, sweetheart. Just like you.”
