Chapter 4 - The Truth Comes Out

Vanessa glared up at me, her chest heaving, refusing to move. But the fight had drained out of Daniel. He sank against the hallway wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor opposite his mistress, looking like a man whose entire world had just collapsed.

“Just do it, Vanessa,” Daniel muttered, staring blankly at the floorboards.

Vanessa whipped her head around to stare at him in disbelief. “Are you insane? You want me to apologize to a kid? After everything we planned?”

“Everything you planned?” I echoed, my ears catching onto the specific word. I stepped back, crossing my arms. “What did you plan, Vanessa? Did you plan to shave my daughter’s head so you could force me out? Did you think if you made life miserable enough for us, Daniel would pack his bags and move into your downtown condo?”

Vanessa’s silence was answer enough. Her eyes flicked away, a guilty flush staining her cheeks.

“Oh, my god,” Daniel whispered, finally looking at Vanessa with something resembling horror. “You... you did that on purpose. You said she was being a nuisance, but you planned it.”

“I didn't plan for her to ruin our lunch meeting!” Vanessa hissed defensively, digging her own grave deeper with every word. “She was crying because you ignored her, Daniel! She kept pulling on your sleeve, asking when Mommy was coming back, reminding you that you had a family! It drove me insane! Every time I looked at her, I saw her mother trapping you in this suburban cage! So yes, when she got gum in her hair, I took the clippers from the supply closet downstairs. I wanted to break her little princess routine. I wanted to show you that she isn't sacred!”

From the living room doorway, a small voice spoke up.

“Mommy... make them go away.”

My heart shattered into a million pieces. I turned around and saw Mia standing there, clutching her stuffed rabbit, tears silently streaming down her face.

All the anger I had kept contained within a cold, sharp box suddenly overflowed into a fierce, protective motherly rage. I didn't care about the scandal, I didn't care about Daniel's career, and I certainly didn't care about Vanessa's corporate status.

“Get out,” I said quietly.

Daniel looked up, pleading in his eyes. “Claire, please. Let's talk about this. We can go to counseling. We can—"

“I said, get out of my house,” I repeated, pointing a steady finger toward the front door. “Both of you. Right now. If you aren't off my property in sixty seconds, I am calling the Chicago Police Department to report an assault on a minor, and I will personally hand every single one of these financial records and security logs to the senior partners at Hale & Whitman Consulting before your badge even swipes through the turnstiles on Monday morning.”

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, brushing off her skirt with shaking hands. She glared at me with pure venom. “You’ll ruin everything, you ungrateful bitch.”

“You did that to yourself,” I replied calmly.

She turned and practically bolted out the front door, slamming it behind her.

Daniel lingered for a second, looking at me, then at our daughter. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He knew there was nothing left to salvage. With a defeated sigh, he pushed himself up off the floor, walked out the door into the fading evening light, and closed it quietly behind him.
