Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Vances

"Maya! Wait! Maya, please!"

Richard screamed, shoving his way past security guards and financial reporters in the grand marble lobby of the Manhattan Financial Center.

Olivia was running behind him, her expensive heels clicking frantically, her face pale with terror. Vanessa was nowhere to be seen; she had slipped out the side exit the moment she realized Richard was completely ruined.

"Stop him," Thomas ordered calmly, waving his hand.

Four broad-shouldered Valenti security guards in dark suits stepped into Richard’s path, forming an impenetrable wall of muscle.

Behind them, Maya walked down the wide marble staircase, flanked by Julian Sterling and three top corporate attorneys. She was carrying Lily in her arms. The little girl was holding a brand-new teddy bear, looking at her father with cool, curious detachment.

"Maya! Look at me!" Richard begged, trying to push through the guards, but he was easily restrained. "Maya, it’s Richard! Your husband! I made a mistake! I was stressed about the business! My mother influenced me!"

"Richard!" Olivia shrieked, outraged that her son was throwing her under the bus.

"I loved you, Maya!" Richard cried, tears finally streaming down his face as reality slammed into him. "We have a daughter together! Think about Lily! You can't destroy her father’s life!"

Maya stopped at the bottom of the stairs. She looked down at Richard as if he were an annoying bug buzzing against a windowpane.

"Think about Lily?" Maya repeated softly. "When you shoved my face into her cake while forty-seven people watched... did you think about Lily?"

Richard choked on his breath. "I... I was wrong! I'll apologize on live television! I'll delete the video! I'll fire Vanessa! Just please... don't take my house! Don't ruin my company!"

Maya stepped forward, stopping inches from the security line.

"You didn't ruin your company because of a cake, Richard," Maya said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that only he could hear. "You ruined your company because you believed that vulnerability was weakness. You believed that because I came from nothing, I deserved nothing. You thought you could crush me, insult me, and humiliate me, and I would stay because I had nowhere else to go."

She reached into her designer coat pocket and pulled out a thick blue folder. She handed it to Thomas, who stepped forward and dropped it onto Richard’s chest.

"What... what is this?" Richard stammered, holding the heavy folder.

"That," Julian Sterling chimed in, stepping up beside Maya and placing a protective hand on her shoulder, "is an official indictment filed by the New York State Attorney General’s Office."

Richard froze. "Indictment?"

"While reviewing your company’s financial records for the loan recall," Julian explained with a cold grin, "our forensic accountants discovered six years of systemic tax fraud, forged customs declarations, and illegal offshore wage deductions."

Richard’s eyes went wide with pure horror.

"The federal marshals are waiting at your office right now, Mr. Vance," Thomas added politely. "And your mother’s Palm Beach condo has already been seized under federal forfeiture laws."

"No... no!" Olivia screamed, clutching her head and collapsing onto the marble floor in a fit of hysterical weeping. "My condo! My beautiful condo!"

Richard dropped to his knees, the blue indictment folder slipping from his numb hands. He looked up at Maya, his face a pathetic mask of snot, tears, and utter defeat.

"Maya... please..." Richard whimpered, reaching out a trembling hand toward her shoe. "Have mercy..."

Maya looked down at him for a long, silent moment. She didn't look angry anymore. She didn't look vindictive. She simply looked free.

"I gave you five years of mercy, Richard," Maya said softly. "You threw it away for a cake."

She turned on her heel, her silk gown rustling softly, and walked toward the private glass doors where a fleet of black armored cars was waiting.

May you like

Julian walked beside her, shielding her from the clicking cameras of the press outside. As they stepped into the crisp Manhattan air, Maya looked up at the blue sky, feeling the cool wind against her cheek.

For the first time in five years, she could breathe.
