Chapter 3 - The Bankruptcy Trap

The corporate offices of Vance Logistics occupied the fourth floor of an aging commercial building in Melville, Long Island.
Richard Vance sat behind his glass desk, his hair disheveled, three empty cups of espresso sitting beside his elbow. His face was pale, his eyes bloodshot with exhaustion and fury.
Vanessa was sitting on the sofa across from him, filing her red nails with a loud, rhythmic rasping sound.
"I’m telling you, Richard, you should just call the police," Vanessa complained without looking up. "Julian Sterling had his thugs throw you against a wall! That’s assault! You could sue him for millions!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Richard barked, slamming his hand onto the desk. "Suit him? Julian Sterling owns the law firm that advises the District Attorney! He could buy my entire life and throw it in the trash before lunch!"
The office door banged open.
Olivia Vance walked in, her face twisted in absolute panic. She wasn't wearing her usual immaculate designer attire; her hair was pulled back haphazardly, and she held a stack of red-stamped legal notices in her trembling hands.
"Richard!" Olivia gasped, dropping the papers onto his desk. "Our bank accounts... they’re frozen!"
Richard leapt out of his chair. "What?! All of them?"
"The corporate operating account, my personal savings, your credit lines—everything!" Olivia cried out, sinking into an armchair. "I tried to use my black card at the salon twenty minutes ago, and it was declined! The manager told me the order came directly from the primary clearing house in Manhattan!"
Richard grabbed the top legal notice. Stamped across the bold black header were the words: NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE DEBT RECALL & ASSET SEIZURE - STERLING CAPITAL CREDIT CORP.
Richard felt a cold bucket of ice water dump directly into his stomach. "No... no, this is a mistake! Our loans were issued by Mid-Atlantic Regional Bank!"
"Sterling Capital bought Mid-Atlantic Regional Bank at eight o'clock this morning," a smooth, cultured voice announced from the open doorway.
Richard, Olivia, and Vanessa turned simultaneously.
Standing in the doorway was Thomas, Julian Sterling’s chief assistant, flanked by three attorneys carrying heavy leather briefcases.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard demanded, trying to summon a shadow of his former bravado. "You can't just freeze my company's operating funds! I have payroll on Friday!"
Thomas walked into the room, stepping over a stray piece of trash on the rug with an expression of mild distaste. He opened a leather folder and began reading in a dry, monotonous tone.
"Mr. Richard Vance. In 2023, you secured a $2.5 million commercial expansion loan from Mid-Atlantic Bank. As collateral, you pledged your personal residence in Long Island, your mother’s condominium in Palm Beach, and forty-nine percent of the equity in Vance Logistics."
Thomas looked up from the folder, his eyes cold behind his gold-rimmed glasses.
"Clause 14-B of your loan agreement states that if the controlling lender determines a 'significant moral or reputational hazard' caused by the borrower, the loan may be recalled in full within twenty-four hours."
Richard’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "Moral hazard?! What moral hazard?!"
Thomas tapped the screen of his iPad, pressing play on a video.
The audio filled the quiet office—the sound of forty-seven guests gasp-laughing, Vanessa’s high-pitched snicker, and Richard’s own booming, cruel voice: “That’ll teach you not to make me look like an idiot in front of my family!”
Vanessa’s viral video played on the screen in high definition.
"The public humiliation of a spouse on a viral platform," Thomas said calmly, "has caused a massive public outcry. Three major retail clients have already canceled their distribution contracts with Vance Logistics this morning to avoid consumer boycotts. Your company’s market value has collapsed by sixty percent in four hours."
"That video was a joke!" Vanessa yelled, standing up from the couch. "It was just a prank!"
Thomas didn't even look at her. "The recall notice stands, Mr. Vance. You have until four o'clock tomorrow afternoon to produce $2.8 million in cash—including interest and default penalties—or Sterling Capital will initiate immediate foreclosure proceedings against all pledged assets."
"Twenty-four hours?!" Richard screamed, his voice cracking in sheer terror. "That’s impossible! I don't have three million dollars!"
"Then I suggest you start packing your bags, Mr. Vance," Thomas said politely. He closed his folder, turned on his heel, and walked out of the office with his attorneys following behind him.
Olivia collapsed into her chair, clutching her chest, weeping hysterically. "My Palm Beach condo... my home... Richard, do something! Call your friends! Call the mayor!"
"I don't have any friends who can lend me three million dollars!" Richard roared, kicking his trash can across the room. He grabbed his hair with both hands, panting like a cornered animal.
Suddenly, his eyes snapped open. A sudden, desperate realization struck his mind.
"Maya," Richard whispered.
Olivia stopped weeping, looking up at him with tear-streaked eyes. "What?"
"Maya!" Richard shouted, a sick, hopeful grin breaking across his face. "Julian Sterling took Maya! He called her his 'business interest'! He must be using her as a domestic manager or a witness against us! If I go to Maya, beg her for forgiveness, bring Lily some toys, and get her to sign an affidavit saying the cake video was staged, Sterling will have to drop the moral hazard clause!"
Vanessa scoffed, crossing her arms. "Are you crazy? You shoved her face in a cake yesterday! You think she’s just going to forgive you?"
May you like
"She’s Maya!" Richard said triumphantly, wiping the sweat from his forehead. "She’s weak! She’s pathetic! She loved me for five years! She always takes me back whenever I give her a little attention! All I have to do is cry a little, apologize, and tell her I miss my daughter. She’ll jump right back into my arms!"
He grabbed his coat from the rack, his eyes gleaming with delusional hope. "Prepare the car, Mom. We’re going to get my wife back."
