Chapter 5 - The Fall of Derek Montgomery

The trial of Derek Montgomery six months later was brief, brutal, and widely covered by the national media.

The prosecution presented the intercepted security logs showing Derek manually disabling the internal safety release of the industrial freezer, the digital recording of his cold-blooded confession from the hotel room, and the financial records proving he had attempted to collect on the two-million-dollar life insurance policy while leaving his pregnant wife to freeze to death.

Sitting in the front row of the courtroom, I watched as my former husband was led inside wearing an orange jumpsuit and heavy wrist chains.

He looked hollowed out, dark circles under his sunken eyes, his arrogance completely shattered. When he looked over at me, expecting to see the weak, compliant woman he had manipulated for five years, he found a woman standing tall, radiating absolute strength.

Beside me sat Ethan Cole, his presence a silent, powerful shield. In my lap, I held a framed photograph of six-month-old Maya and Liam—healthy, laughing, and thriving.

The jury took less than forty-five minutes to reach a verdict.

"On count one, attempted first-degree murder, we find the defendant guilty," the jury foreman announced clearly. "On count two, attempted double feticide, guilty. On count three, grand wire fraud, guilty."

The judge didn't show a single ounce of mercy.

"Derek Montgomery," the judge stated, looking down at Derek with utter contempt. "You demonstrated a level of cold, calculated cruelty that revolts human decency. You left your pregnant wife to suffer an unimaginable death for monetary gain. I sentence you to life in state prison without the possibility of parole."
