Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Empire

The holding facility at the federal courthouse in downtown Richmond smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee.
Colin sat on a stainless-steel bench inside the holding cell, his expensive navy sport coat wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wide with a terrifying realization that his life of unearned privilege had finally hit a brick wall.
Outside the glass partition, Lenora was pacing the corridor like a caged tigress, screaming into her smartphone as she tried to reach every high-priced defense attorney in the Tri-State area. None of them were taking her calls. When word leaked that a commercial loan fraud case involved falsified federal domestic records and an active-duty Coast Guard officer holding a high-level procurement oversight clearance, every defense firm within a hundred miles ran in the opposite direction.
Down the hall, in a private conference room, Paige sat across the table from her attorney and Commander Vance, reviewing the final liquidation paperwork for the Barlow family’s entangled assets.
“The forensic audit of Barlow & Associates Legal Counsel turned up even more than we anticipated,” Vance reported, sliding a thick legal ledger across the table. “It turns out your mother-in-law has been siphoning funds from dormant client trust accounts for years to prop up her failing real estate portfolio. Colin was just her proxy.”
Paige traced her finger along the margin of the document. She felt no anger—only a profound, steady sense of closure.
“What happens to the Chesapeake house?” she asked.
“It’s tied up in federal asset forfeiture pending the investigation into fraudulent loan collateral,” Vance replied. “However, because your pre-marital inheritance and personal military allowances were legally separated into an independent trust, the federal judge has already granted you immediate sole ownership of your personal accounts and full, unhindered custody of Wren, with zero visitation restrictions for Colin until federal sentencing is resolved.”
The door to the conference room opened softly, and Admiral Keene stepped inside. He held a small, leather-bound folder bearing the insignia of the Department of Transportation and the United States Coast Guard.
“Excuse me, Commander Vance, Counsel,” the admiral said, nodding respectfully before turning his gaze directly to Paige. “Lieutenant Commander Hollis. Do you have a moment?”
Paige stood up instantly, snapping to attention. “At your disposal, Admiral.”
Admiral Keene smiled—a rare, genuine expression that softened his stern features. He opened the folder and placed a fresh set of gold shoulder boards on the table, alongside official orders bearing the gold seal of the Commandant of the Coast Guard.
“Your transfer to lead the regional procurement oversight unit in Washington, D.C., has been expedited,” Admiral Keene said, his voice ringing with quiet pride. “Effective Monday morning, you report directly to Headquarters. And given the resilience, tactical clarity, and unflinching composure you’ve demonstrated over the past week under extreme duress, the promotion accompanying this assignment has been bumped from Commander-select to full Commander.”
Paige looked down at the gold shoulder boards. They caught the harsh fluorescent light, shining brilliantly against the dark wood of the table.
For six years, she had tried to shrink herself to fit into a family that viewed her success as a threat and her independence as an insult. They had tried to break her spirit with a fake paternity test and a stolen home. Instead, they had simply cleared the path for her to rise higher than she had ever imagined.

“Thank you, sir,” Paige said, her voice steady and proud. “I won't let you down.”
“I know you won't, Commander,” the admiral replied. “Now go pack your bags. Your daughter has a very important move to make.”
