Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Setup

The gold-embossed lettering on the second folder—PRIVATE SETTLEMENT—seemed to burn under the dim light of the foyer chandelier.

Paige didn't look away from it. Every piece of the puzzle clicked violently into place. For the past six months, Colin had grown increasingly distant, complaining about household expenses, insisting that Paige consolidate her personal savings into a joint account managed by his mother’s financial firm, and subtly planting seeds of doubt among his relatives about her late-night hours at the Coast Guard base.

They hadn't invited her to a family surprise. They had orchestrated an ambush designed to brand her as an unfaithful wife, strip her of her rights, force her out of the house, and bully her into signing away her financial assets before she had time to draw a breath.

Admiral Keene noticed Paige’s gaze shifting toward the hidden folder. With a swift, practiced movement, he reached out and slid the second folder out from beneath the magazine.

“Admiral, that is private family business!” Lenora barked, stepping forward with her hands raised in protest, her face flushing a mottled red. “You have no right to touch—!”

“Ma’am,” Admiral Keene interrupted, his voice cutting through the room with the unquestionable authority of a three-star flag officer. “I am the commanding officer of the officer standing before you. When a member of my command is subjected to coordinated harassment and fraudulent legal intimidation on a domestic front, it ceases to be a private family matter and becomes a security concern.”

He opened the folder. Inside were pre-printed divorce filings, a quitclaim deed demanding Paige sign over her pre-existing equity in the Chesapeake home, and a financial waiver relinquishing any claim to joint assets, all drafted by Barlow & Associates Legal Counsel—Lenora’s brother’s firm.

The terms were predatory. They demanded Paige vacate the premises within twenty-four hours, accept zero spousal or child support, and surrender her vehicle as "restitution for marital breach."

Admiral Keene flipped slowly through the pages, his expression a mask of cold fury. He looked up at Colin, who was now sweating profusely under his tailored sport coat.

“Mr. Barlow,” the admiral said softly, though the menace in his tone made several of the seated cousins shrink back. “You had a fraudulent document drawn up to defame your wife, coupled with an extortionate settlement agreement designed to rob her of her property while she is actively serving her country. Is that correct?”

“It’s—it’s an amicable separation proposal!” Colin stammered, his voice cracking. “She’s been unfaithful! Everyone in this family knows she’s been sleeping at the base overnight for no reason!”

“My overnight operations involve classified multi-agency port security protocols, Colin,” Paige said, her voice dropping into a register so cold and steady that it silenced the entire room. “Protocols you swore to respect when you married a military officer. But you wouldn't know anything about my duties, because for the last year, you’ve been too busy funneling our joint savings into your mother’s failing real estate ventures.”

Lenora’s eyes flashed with venom. “How dare you accuse my family of financial impropriety! You’re a disgraced adulteress—!”

“Enough,” Admiral Keene commanded. He closed the settlement folder with a crisp snap. He turned to Paige, his demeanor softening into professional respect. “Lieutenant Commander Hollis, wake your daughter fully, gather your immediate essentials, and step outside. My vehicle is idling in the drive. You are not spending another second under this roof.”

Paige nodded once. “Aye, aye, sir.”

She adjusted sleeping Wren against her shoulder, kissing her soft forehead. As she turned toward the stairs to pack a single bag, Colin lunged forward, panicked by the sudden collapse of his mother’s master plan.

“Paige, wait! Don't be dramatic! We can talk about this!” Colin pleaded, reaching out to grab her arm.

Before Colin’s fingers could touch her sleeve, Admiral Keene stepped directly into his path, blocking him with the immovable presence of a seasoned commander.

“Do not touch a United States military officer,” the admiral said quietly, staring down into Colin’s terrified eyes. “And I strongly suggest, Mr. Barlow, that you retain a very good criminal defense attorney before the sun rises tomorrow. Because my legal team is about to audit every single document in this house.”

Paige walked past them up the stairs, her boots echoing against the wood. She didn't look back. The house that had felt like a cage for two years was now just bricks and mortar, left far behind as she stepped out into the cool Virginia night and toward a future they could never control.
