Chapter 9 - Justice Served

The months that followed were a whirlwind of legal proceedings, but for the first time in my life, I felt completely in control.
The video recording from my phone, coupled with the confession Derek had so arrogantly delivered in the living room, was an open-and-shut case for the prosecution. The FBI quickly got involved once the evidence of his offshore corporate laundering and wire fraud came to light. His accomplice, Vince, cut a deal within forty-eight hours, providing detailed testimony about how Derek had planned to stage the fire at the cabin.
Derek was denied bail, classified as a severe flight risk. The man who had once commanded corporate boardrooms was reduced to an orange jumpsuit, waiting for a trial that would ultimately sentence him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
I hired a brilliant, fierce family attorney who finalized our divorce in record time. Because of the criminal charges, Derek’s rights were completely terminated, and the court awarded me full, permanent custody of Lily. The suburban house, the assets, and the accounts were frozen, liquidated, and eventually funneled into a secure trust fund for Lily's future.
But the best part of the justice system wasn't the legal victories. It was the return of my peace of mind.

The gaslighting that had made me doubt my own instincts for years completely evaporated. I realized that I wasn't fragile, I wasn't dramatic, and I wasn't weak. I was a mother who had listened to her child, found the strength to run, and fought like hell to protect her.
Lily began seeing a wonderful child therapist who helped her process the trauma of that gray Saturday morning. Children are incredibly resilient when they feel safe. With every passing week, the color returned to her cheeks, her laughter grew louder, and the nightmares faded into distant memories. She no longer checked the locks on the doors or whispered her fears under her blankets. She was allowed to just be a child again.
