Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

One year later, the sun rose over a completely different Saturday morning.

The air didn't smell like burnt toast or sharp lemon cleaner. It smelled like fresh pine, mountain air, and wild huckleberries.

We had sold the suburban house and moved permanently to the mountains, purchasing a beautiful, sunlit cottage just a few miles down the road from my mother's cabin. It had a wraparound porch, a big garden where Lily could run, and an art studio for me in the renovated barn. I had returned to painting, a passion Derek had convinced me was a waste of time. My canvases were now filled with bright, vibrant colors—landscapes of sunrise over the peaks, and portraits of a little girl laughing in the wind.

Lily was outside on the porch, wearing a pair of bright yellow overalls, helping her grandmother plant a new bed of summer flowers. Her laughter drifted through the open kitchen window, sweet and clear.

"Mommy! Come look!" Lily called out, her voice bouncing happily off the trees. "A butterfly landed on Barnaby's ear!"

I smiled, setting down my coffee mug. I walked out onto the porch, the warm morning sun bathing my face in a gentle, golden light. I watched my mother guide Lily’s small hands into the rich, dark soil, teaching her how to nurture something beautiful from the earth.

I took a deep, clear breath, feeling the solid wood of the porch beneath my feet.

We had run through the dark, through the fog, and through the fear. But we had made it to the other side. As I walked down the steps to join my family, I knew that the shadow was gone for good. We were finally home, we were finally free, and we were completely safe.
