Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

By spring, Bright Path clinic was thriving more than ever. Freed from the administrative dead weight and financial drain Caleb had secretly imposed, we expanded our therapy programs, hired two new pediatric specialists, and launched a dedicated outreach initiative for families navigating speech development challenges.

I was sitting in my newly reorganized corner office at the clinic on a warm Friday afternoon in late April, reviewing grant applications, when my office door opened. My clinic manager, Sarah, walked in carrying a large bouquet of bright yellow tulips.

“Delivery for you, Hannah,” Sarah smiled, setting them on my desk.

I pulled the small white envelope from the stems and opened it. Inside was a handwritten note from Marcus Vance: “Congratulations on a successful quarter. Some people build walls to keep others out; you built a foundation that nothing can shake. Enjoy the sunshine.”

I smiled, placing the note beside a framed photograph of Maisie and me taken at the park the previous weekend. We were both laughing, our hair blowing in the spring breeze, completely free and unburdened.

Later that evening, after picking Maisie up from preschool, we stopped by the neighborhood park. While she ran toward the swings, her red backpack swinging cheerfully from her shoulder—now filled with colored markers, snacks, and her favorite stuffed rabbit—I watched her with a profound sense of peace.

The nightmare of New Year’s Eve felt like a lifetime ago. The winter cold had given way to vibrant green grass and blooming dogwood trees across Grand Rapids.
