Chapter 10 - The Brightest Chapter

Five years passed in what felt like a single heartbeat.

On a crisp autumn afternoon in October, I stood outside Bright Path clinic watching children and parents stream through our newly expanded double glass doors. The clinic was now a regional reference center for pediatric speech therapy, employing twenty-two therapists and serving hundreds of families across West Michigan.

Maisie was nine years old now, a smart, confident fourth-grader with a sharp wit and an artistic soul. That morning, before heading to school, she had packed her belongings into a brand-new navy blue backpack—completely replacing the red one that had sat on Diane’s living room rug five years ago. We had burned the old red backpack in Dad’s fire pit two summers prior in a small, symbolic ceremony of our own.

I drove back to the house in Grand Rapids—the home I had officially purchased from the family trust and completely renovated, painting the front door a welcoming shade of deep forest green. Dad still lived just ten minutes away, though he spent most weekends at our house helping Maisie build impossibly complex Lego castles that put her old wooden blocks to shame.

As I unlocked the front door and stepped inside, the warm scent of cinnamon tea and autumn air greeted me. There were no hidden secrets behind these walls anymore, no forged documents, no locked doors, and no deceit. There was only light, laughter, and an absolute, unshakeable peace.

I walked into the kitchen, set my briefcase on the counter, and looked out the window at the maple trees shedding their golden leaves across the lawn. My phone buzzed on the counter with a calendar notification for a board meeting the following week, but I ignored it for a moment, smiling as I realized something wonderful:

We hadn't just survived the end of a chapter. We had written an entirely new book—one where we held the pen from the very first page to the very last.
